So i promised some pics of my day and here are a few, see how i go for time, might get a few more than a few up??

Well we have a big drive planned next weekend into Permit country in the Otways and just wanted to make sure the cars were running ok. We had a MASSIVE amount of rain on Saturday so the Bush was calling us on Sunday for a quick spin.

Small but heavily modified group gathered for a bit of a play and out we went to Paddy's Swamp. Its a spot that get a bit of traffic but we kinda went random and tired our luck in areas not often travelled and certainly a big car had not done these tracks in many years. Tracks they were though. No crunching bush for us.

Danny the Rogue Dung Beetle was my Navi for the day and we had a Zuk fully modded, a GQ LWB running a 5.7 LS1 and a Shortie on Simexes.

Got out for a walk to see if the track was drivable. all parked up.

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050961.jpg?t=1322483195

getting there
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050962.jpg?t=1322483259

Remember the rain we had on Saturday! look at the River! I cant believe how dry it was in this bush!
The river is the bottom and now its going to get interesting, its been a commute until this point!
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050963.jpg?t=1322483343

I didn't get far up the other side before the winch rope got dragged out! The back wheels did not even get off the bottom. The rut at the bottom was more than 600mm deep!
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050964.jpg

So the back wheels did not follow the front wheels, i'm off the edge and need to drag the back up a 1.5m drop off.
Sitting on its chassis rails, fully locked, all 4 wheels spinning, not making a dent!
BIG WINCH!
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050965.jpg?t=1322483576

The only way is up now
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050966.jpg?t=1322483737

Nah do the maths, way too much weight there! time for a double line pull.
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050967.jpg?t=1322483821

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050968.jpg?t=1322484003

Its great to be out with guys that know what they are doing. You can see that i am sitting on my guts.
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050969.jpg?t=1322484132

With a double line pull comes more winch power, more winch power allow more strain and Snap!
Ummmm? That aint good! Broken Winch rope! The rope is only 4 or 5 winch pulls old! Damn!!
http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050970.jpg

Danny did the splice, took a few goes but it held the load. The Navi did good for a Toyota driver.;)

MudRunnerTD
29th November 2011, 12:40 AM
Well the Splice was re done 4 or 5 times and got longer and longer each time it failed. This was a Monster pull and surely could not get much heavier!

http://nissanpatrol.com.au/images/Action%20Pics%204B/P1050990.jpg?t=1322566341

He had a couple of runs at it though

MudRunnerTD
3rd December 2011, 11:18 PM
Well guys there is a massive write up coming on the repair of the hub above!

Old mate the Rogue Dung Beetle has been a huge help and he and i have spent the last 16 hours rebuilding the front end of the GQ. MASSIVE TASK.

We did a full swivel hub rebuild and replaced the wheel bearings to the front. There was a fair bit of damage to the knuckle housing but some very neat dremel work by Danny had it looking sweet.

We took a heap of pics and will be able to do a CV & Swivel Hub rebuild thread in the DIY section in the coming days.

Knackered now though and picking up Danny at 5:15am for a 6am meet-up in the morning to go do an extreme trip into the Otways........ Watch this space! Yeah Ha!!

Thanks Danny, Your a Champ mate!

Wow, had a big day! 12 hours on the tracks, hard tracks, good tracks, many that i had never seen before. I thought i had seen plenty of the Otways but today was awesome.

There are a few photos and i will see what i can do. Got allot to put in here from last weekend too so just need to find some time.

On a side note, i smashed my HiMount at 8am this morning on the first track!!! Damn!! Need to call Mal Leslie about a rebuild i think ;) It made the rest of the day interesting let me tell you, I take it for granted that I am self recoverable. to blow the winch first thing in the morning nearly saw me head for home very early. Sooo Glad I didn't.

MudRunnerTD
5th December 2011, 03:04 PM
Bugger, Mal wants $1300 to fix and mod my HiMount!! Damn, sounds nice but might have to wait a bit. I am keen to put a winch on the front of the GU before Christmas so the Hi Mount mods will have to wait. He also cant even look at it until mid January and that just wont do! i will chase some parts out of the US and rebuild it myself and may think about Mods by Mal into next year.....

I have been slack in this thread but leading into Christmas been a bit hectic here.

Got over to Simon's house from 4WD TV today and got a sneak peak at my "Your Rig" segment running episode 2 in the new year.

3 Minutes of air time and heaps of really good footage. Our Sticker got a close up still shot!!!! Hell Yeah!!

Also got a look at a segment they have put together for Your 4x4 of the trip to Wombat that will be in the next series too!!

Looks great.

I have got a heap of stuff to add here but just short on time. Might find some over the break after my trip. (Likely to be some good pic from the trip too) ;)

MudRunnerTD

It's just what the doctor ordered mate - how did you fit it so clean over the centre bonnet lines??

I cut the holes under it, i left the centre bracing in place for the bonnet as i did not want to compromise the strength of the bonnet at all, mainly cause i was hanging my intercooler off the bonnet under that scoop. Most guys i have seen just cut it out. I dont think it gets in the way and the bonnet is factory tough.

Once i was clear on where the scoop would sit on the bonnet i then built up the centre dip down with fibre bog at the front and the back of the scoop. took a bit of stuffing around and then finished it with Sikaflex, sanded it down and kept the hard edge at the top so it would look factory the sprayed it. I am not sure if i have any close up shots of the scoop? i'll have a look and post if i find them for you Scotty.

Leave it with me mate. I did see your thread the other day about scoops but you were talking about forward or backwards and i was in a rush so did not chime in. I will see what i can find for ya mate.

last time out i crunched my Himount winch and it is currently stripped out and in pieces waiting on parts. While its out i took the opportunity to take the front bar off my GQ and i sold it for a good price last weekend on ebay. Been really keen to swap over to a Tube bar with side hoops.

Bought one today and will be delivered tomorrow. I got one of the last FAT bars with side hoops before he closed his doors. It's been on a car but looks in very good nick

Yeah AB real shame, he really opened the way in terms of bar work, i give him credit for the design of the comp tube bar and know that his work is top shelf. Not sure what happened to him or where he ended up though? Think he just had enough and probably went to the mines or something.

Really pleased to pick up one of his bars though ;)

Hey Scotty, where are you getting your bar from mate? I was looking at the Biders bar and the Millweld bar but this came up at the right price.

Nice bar, MR! What are the eye bolts on either side used for?

At this stage Silver they are for storing the winch hook when not in use.... ;) I will wait to actually eye ball the bar today to see if they are rated and mounted for a snatch block double line pull. Cant imagine they would be suitable for a snatch recovery? but it is a Cheezy bar so its not out of the question.... That plate they are mounted to goes all the way to the chassis rail and is the main mount.

Huge undertaking, Reckon it will be better than new when you finish it.
Did the same thing with a Lotus Cortina once. massive buzz when it finally gets the last polish, almost scared to take it out.
Bet you won't be taking it back through those mud pits.
The last post was June 2010, guess you would have finished it by now.

Well i have rubbed back the F.A.T. Bar and have given it some fresh paint over the weekend looks a treat. THe parts for the high mount took a little longer than i thought to arrive but have everything now. Would still like to tap and bolt the free spool so might do that while its off the car.

Glad i am taking the GUIV to Loveday or i'd be in a little trouble.

Just got home from an extreme high country trip in the Mighty GQ! Damn I love this car!!

INSANE TRIP!

5 GQs and a well sorted hilux (solid axle front)

Shot some wicked windscreen footage that I will try and get on here in the next couple of days. This trip is the reason I have not got a Madigan Line report up yet. Got home and had a week to get the GQ ready for this trip.

We drove all night Friday and pitched camp at 6am, rolled out again at 11:30am and did the summit of Skenes around 9pm last night where I took that pic. Rolled back into camp around 1am for dinner and beer. Lmao

Man we have just done some Wild tracks! Awesome!

Nah mate, i should have taken one but not really much to see, not sure i would have got a shot that would have given any perspective of it internally, the walls where smooth and flat and made of Ice! ;) You could just make out the "Bricks"

There was a big patch of ground where they had harvested the snow from about 10m away. They basically cut the blocks of snow "Shovel by Shovel" and carried them over and stacked them up. Very Very Cool!

Sorry Brando I did not see your post before mate.

It is made from Nylon and I bought it from a plastic place (resiplex) then drilled it in the drill press with a spade core bit then a jig saw will get it done. I then used a bench router to put a radius on all the edges. Easy if you have the right gear.

The Nylon was not real cheap though to be honest and I probably on saved $50 over buying an alloy hawse fairlead which are an off the shelf item.

Great job mate, ever think of laminating front diff or changing to GU.

Yeah if i keep breaking the CVs i will have to think about going the GU front end. I'd do that rather than going Cals Chromoly CVs and bracing the GQ stuff as the GU run bigger stronger diffs, bigger axles, Bigger Brakes (Twin Pots and bigger disks ;) ) and stronger CVs so this would be my preferred. My front Airlocker would bolt straight in with the 4.6 ratios out of the GQ too! Winner for sure. People still want silly money for the GU front diff though!! Would be keen to grab a pair of GU diffs for the best set up though. It will increase the wheel track too. going price is over $2000 for a pair of GU diffs though!!! WOW!

I am finding them too soft for my setup. the thing flexes really well but the rear springs are so soft i hit the bump stops with ease and the body roll just gets silly at times! It wants to lift the front left all the time because the rear just squats and rolls. I have blown a couple of rear shocks and want to rethink this setup.

Been talking to the guys at Superiors directly about my setup and they are leaning towards the Amadas paired with the TD springs into the GQ and they are rating this setup for hard core and Extreme use. Sounds like my kinda setup ;)

the good thing is if you get the armadas you will be able the fit the biggest they offer...12 inch travel definatly need a bump stop extension for.that or you will keep blowing them you would only need 9 to 10 in the front. i have 11 and mine dosnt use the full down travel. to get the front working better the best thing is a rear sway bar. im looking into a currie industries anti rock sway bar for mine as the body roll is outta control. in some situations

Over last day or so have read through the whole thread. WHAT A BUILD lol. Great work and attention to detail by the looks of it.

Seems your GQ is quite a weapon. I just happen to live between Gisborne and Bacchus Marsh about 100mtrs from Wombat so when my rig is moving I would love to catch up and see yours in action. A few things have inspired me lol but see how money goes as always.

Well guys it was a massive weekend and I have some great photos. There was a great crew of guys out with me and I don't think any of us will ever forget this trip.

I have a fair bit to share about some of the recoveries we were forced to undertake and lessons to be learned from this. I did a triple line pull with my himount and had a 12,000 winch on a second car helping and saw both winches stall out and it took almost 2 hours to become unstuck out of a very sticky bog. Quite extraordinary!

6 cars went in, every car was as modified as my GQ or better and everyone was very experienced in vehicle recovery and the extreme end of our hobby. Safety was number 1 and all care and thought was undertaken. Equipment was tested to its limit and some to failure as noted above.

There were No Cowboys in our group just good men and a great woman that knew what they needed to do and how to get it done.

Come What May.

When I get near my computer I will post a few forum friendly pics.

Cheers Fellas

I hate Bog Holes! I drive around them when ever i can. No heros. I hate them. they cost money and kill cars. I was not a fan of doing this particular track, i ahve done it before and promised myself i would never do it again! Damn it! i did it again in the bloody DARK! I saw for the first time the tree that i wrapped tha car around about 4 years ago that caused me te begin the strip down and Ground up Rebuild featured in this thread. This bloody track! This track really was a Winching Exercise. Rough. Tough. Undrivable. I went in fully prepared to travel Solo and self recover from what ever may present for the length of the track. My Navi was well experienced and i had enough gear to do pretty well anything as long as my equipment did not fail.

How long did you spend cleaning her?

MudRunnerTD
13th December 2012, 08:20 PM
Actually I blew off most of the mud on the panels but parked it up as I got home ver very late. The mud is drying under earth and is Falling off the underside in the backyard as we speak. I will get stuck into it over the weekend.

Roofy the radiator is coming out mate to give it a good clean. Might even get it cleaned out internally too. The engine was running a little hot so time to do that anyway. Replace the thermostat over the break too and my viscous fan is not coming on so will service that while its stripped.

I reckon the GQ will take a month or two to get over this trip. I have the Amadas are lined up to go on and thinking of fitting GU diff awhile I'm at it.

Needs a little lovin now I think. ;)

That is insane stuff.. I might need bigger gear...!
What size pulley blocks and straps were used. And what size was the shackle which exploded?

I'm with Jas, looks like fun, but dam it would have been frustrating...

Optima's are good for a car that gets used but i have found that when the car sits and only gets driven every now and then the don't hold the charge like a proper deep cycle. But sounds like you got a bargain any way!!

They are going to be awesome behind the winch!!! After the last trip I definitely need some more grunt.

I might run a hot wire and isolation switch between the two batteries under extreme winching to get I little more umph!!

Nice.........after looking at the photos of your latest trip I would say you need to go to 24 volts for winching LOL

Hope you had a good Christmas mate.

Cheers Rodney

Have you just got the standard cables running to the winch Daz? Sounds like you could benefit from some 35mm welding flex or something

G'day Rod,

Yeah mate 24v would be awesome! One of the other guys had 24v and it was insane! Simply uncomparable! Was even Silly to see how my Himount with a Bearing end and 6hp motor was a joke compared to his winch running 24v through it.

The great thing about these is that they are sealed ;). These would be suitable to mount in the rear passenger side footwell for a 24v setup!! 24v alternator mounted above the current one and Bobs ya auntie!

Hmmmmmm???

Merry Christmas mate.

Hey Winnie,

Yeah I am running welding flex to the winch via a Titan Solenoid now so the only way to get some more out of it is more battery then 24v as above.

After a big night doing looooong double line skull drags the batteries were cooked. Part of my problem with the triple line pull featured a few pages ago was that the batteries had given up the ghost by then. All Hail the mighty TD42 running off 9v. ;)

Keep us posted on how those shocks go, if they are any good I will be getting a set for the GQ. Awesome work mate. Sounds like its time for a twin motor 24v giggle pin air free spool setup for the ole wagon.
