Well as most of you know i sold the Old SWB to a young bloke from North QLD. It was sad to see her go but i think she went to a good home... keep an eye out for it on here the new owners name is Acco92 and hes named shorty "Ramjet".
Now as for me. On the weekend i purchased a 2004 GU IV 3.0L Auto. Its all kitted out and I think I got an awesome deal for it.
The mods that are already done are:
4" TJM Suspension Lift with drop boxes RTC steering damper and adjustable panhards
Factory Bullbar
T-Max Winch
Safari Snorkel
Lots of spotties
Outback rear draw system
Cargo barrier, top boot parcel shelf and boot divider
GME 80 channel
Rhino Roof Racks, Cage and Shovel Mount
Front auto locker
Diesel power chip
Opposite lock dual battery system
33" BF Goodrich A/T
17" Clarion Roof mount DVD Player
Scrub bars/Sliders
The mods that are on my list:
Exhaust
Cruise control
Honestly i couldnt think of many things that needed to be added to this and those two mods above are seriously probably never going to get done but i had to put somthing in it lol.
Its the first of the GU IV Bodies but it still runs the DI motor. Im really looking forward to learning about the diesel motors and how to keep it running nice ill be doing a basic service on it this weekend or the next.
Ill be adding other pics to this thread of it getting into the action soon but for now here are a few i have!

Lay on the ground at your B pillar and shoot a video of the underside of the car from the front wheel to the back wheel.
The sway bar will be about 22mm thick bar bolted under the Radius Arms running across the car and the linkages up to the chassis rails on both sides. The rear is bolted to the front of the rear diff under the drive shafts and linkages both ends to the chassis

Hey Chris,
Mate there is just one words for the drawers, AWESOME! i have some recovery gear in one side and tools in the otherand it was absolutely awesome to be able to just open up and know exactly where to look. Even down to the spare few rolls of TP stashed in the compartment near the wheel arches. the car is amazing. sooo much space, heaps of clearance and traction and even though its nothing like the TB42(or TD42 but ive never driven one) it still has plenty of bower to boot. it doesnt even notice the trailer, everything is just great. im very happy with my purchase, thanks for the comments though =)

UPDATE: so no thanks to mark(Mudski), ive recieved my NADS kit and catch can, just waiting on the gauge to arrive from the US, again pointed in the right direction by mark, its a tidy bit of gear. BTW mate, i ordered Yellow, i think its a little different to the troll yellow but all the same im trying to keep it similar. im dropping the car into the mechanic tomorrow and im hoping to avoid a big bill when i get it back but what can i do?
getting him to go over the car and check anything that needs to/will need to soon be replaced. there is a vicious wobble in te front end, ive had the tyres re-balanced so i suspect flogged out bushes(i know the steering damper bushes need replacing), im sure the brakes need replacing, the NADS Kit need to be fitted and other unexpected issues. also i want him to look at the DP Chip, and see about getting more power as the car uses too much fuel at the moment with lack of power.

Hey mate I actually live in Wollongong and work in cronulla. It's nice to see another NSW person on here Lol. We seem to have the most patrol owners who don't actually use their cars Lol. so just a little update, i had a close call on monday whilst driving to work. i was driving to drop the car off at the mechanic so it could have its first service, but mainly to get looked over to see what things i needed to fix/keep an eye on and also to have its NADS done. i got 20 mins down the road and low and behold a bloody ripper of a noise started from the rear of the car. i pulled over and had a look and was amazed to find 4 wheel nuts gone, 2 barely holding on all the studs ruined as well as a completely stuffed rim.
I had to get it towed the rest of the way, so when i rang NRMA they told me my car was over the weight (2500kg) that my roadside assist covered. i would need to upgrade the coverage and because i needed it done then and there i would also need to pay a $60 surcharge. it was too early and i was too worried about the car to argue and just paid it. ive since complained to NRMA saying that ALL my previous cars(all patrols) weighed over 2500kg and this had never been mentioned.
I spoke to my mechanic today as we've both been crook all week so the car hasnt been looked at till now. there was no other damage other than the studs and rim so thats a relief. also, hes fitted the catch can, and will be fitting the vales and gauge in the next week. i am a little nervous about getting the bill for this one BUT at least ill know where im at with things that need fixing now, or in the near future.

Hey all just got my nads fitted. Now I have the gauge and all fitted what Figures should I be looking at? It's peak boost is 21psi and highest egt I have seen so far it's 524°c. Because it's auto it doesn't hold the bossy when I back off but cruising at 110kph boost is anywhere between 5-10 psi and egt at around 350°c but goes into the 400s and 500s when it's revving high. Are these figures OK?

If your getting 21psi max I would go slighty higher in mid range boost. I.E 100ks to about 14 or 15psi. You might find your egts will drop a bit more. To raise your mid range boost wind the needle valve in a little.
500c is close to top end of the egt scale in my opinion.

WOW ,you reckon 14-15 psi @ 100kph, to me that's a lot of pressure for a long time
Seems a tad high I followed Chaz Yellowfoots lead and went for 10PSI at 100kph
My max is about 20PSI, egt's climb when pushed hard as to be expected and around
300-350c solo on the hwy

Thanks mate it does go up to that boost but it is sooo hard to tell what is normal because of the auto and it letting go of the boost as soon as you back off. I guess I'm not used to diesel and turbo and auto etc yet.

If I run 10psi the car runs like a bag of poo. Been at 15 for nearly a year, even towed my camper on numerous times at this pressure with no issues. I think it's all relative to the max boost. You run 15psi max, you go 10 at 100ks. You run 20, go higher mid range boost.

Right, i know some of you already know somehitng has happened to my car a few weeks ago, and some may not.
Bit of background first. I got NADS fitted to the car just under a month ago. I picked the car up from the mechanic just on or around the 26th/27th June. Drove the car around for a week and it drove fine. I was planning on going on a camping trip on the weekend of the 4th July. I was not even 5 minutes into this trip and lost all power on a steep hill ascent. White smoke poured out of the engine bay and i did not have time to see if it also came out of the exhaust pipe as i was on a main highway and in an extremely dangerous position as there was no where to pull over. long story short the car was towed back to the mechanic who had done all the NADS to tell me what the F%^& had happened to my car.
I have just spoken to him today and he is under the impression one of the valves has disintegrated. He told me there is little or no compression (cant remember which) in cylinder no 3. His diagnosis hasnt been fully completed but he believes this problem to be a head related issue and i will probably not be up for sourcing a new motor.
With all that in mind i thought i would make a post about it to get some other opinions. i know i havent been terribly detailed with my post, but its hard to know what to include and what not to. if i havent been detailed enough with somthing ask me ill answer it to to best of my ability, but yeah any ideas on what caused this etc would be much appreciated guys.
cheers

If it's disintegrated normally means it has gotten way to hot. I'd be interested to see the state of the intake manifold. I just hope that the heat has killed the head and not melted or cracked a piston. The fact it's #3 is very concerning.

ok great, i can answer all that.
boost was around the 18-20psi mark, EGT @ around 470degc
most of the smoke from the engine bay came from the hose at the bottom of the catch can blowing off (due to the catch can filling up with oil) and blowing oil all over the side of the motor. there was a real burned smell in the bay when i was finally ina safe place to pop the hood. the motor still runs, but its super super rough and white smoke comes out of the exhaust. i didnt see if the radiator was down on water but i know that the motor lost a ship load of oil it went from full to below empty when the NRMA mech tried to start it to do his initial diagnosis.

ok im not fussed mate, obviously i will be more dissapointed, but regardless the bloody thing has to be fixed. thanks for the advice though, its really appreciated. when i know more ill be posting it up on here. question though, the EGTs were that hot from what i believe? the rings/pistons wouldnt be likely to melt at those temps would they? especially considering i was on the road for not even 5 mins so the motor hadnt been workign that hard prior to it going kaput?

470 is getting up there but this is post turbo you can't really tell what each individual cylinder is running at. It is possible that if the intake is gunked up around cylinders then that particular cylinder will run hotter than the rest without you knowing

yep fair enough, oh well i think he said he was going to pull more bits off it and see what actual damage there is in it, will just have to wait till he dismisses all speculation and has a clear cut answer on what the problem is.

thanks for all the support fellas. i think of it like this. i could get angry, it would upset the missus, probably burn the bridge with the mechanic looking at it, and i would be no better off, infact i would probably be worse. the way i see it is i just need to cop it on the chin, and forget about how sh!t it is and look for positives. i could have been stranded in the middle of the simmo with all the boys (or heaven forbid by myself) and even though i would have been surrounded by people that would bend over backwards to help it would have still been a reall shitty situation. im lucky no one got hurt, the car is still pretty much in one piece and it is repairable, and at the end of the day i will have a motor that has been pulled apart looked at inspected for anything else that could potentially go wrong and have it fixed and then ill be back on the road.
i feel really lucky to have this forum and all you genuine people on here to offer your condolences and i say thank you for being such top blokes. i am also lucky to have a supportive missus and a caring family who will also bend over backwards to help me sort this out.
last few months have been quite bad round here and i guess all i can say is when it rains, it bloody pours. fortunately all storms pass, i just have to weather it till it does.

haha thanks mate, i dont think ill be driving down then unfortunately. IF it is fixed by then i think ill be broke from the whole ordeal.

Righto, well here it is. Im up for a new motor, he couldnt get a camera into the head but he took the bottom of the sump off and found lots of metal so its either a cracked piston or destroyed rings. I cant express how dissapointed I am... pretty gutted TBH.
But onward and upward. What are my options from here to get the bloody thing fixed?
The car is a 2004 model, so i believe i am able to throw in a TD42 into it without too many complications? If i went down this path, what would I be up for? new gearbox? new diff centers? I believe the engine mounts are in different positions so they would need to be moved? I would need to find a rolled patrol and how much am i looking at just for that?
If I put another 3l into it, I'm just putting another potential hand grenade into it right?
I'm pretty lost for words at the moment but if anyone wants to make some suggestions about where i should start to look and what to look for I would be most appreciative.

Thats terrible Nic! Cheapest option is to throw a second hand motor in, the later the better. Next options are engine conversions, the td42 will probably be the cheapest coz the gearbox is the same you just need to take a spacer off the front of the gearbox, relocate the engine mount brackets on the chassis and possibly splice the loom to get the techo to work. V8 conversion will probably be around 15k same as a rebuild.
As a ball park you'd start with $5k and work your way up from there unfortunately

Interesting, this same question was just posted in another thread, I understood that the engine had to have been installed in the car, ie. the TD was stopped in 2006 as the ADRs eliminated them for pluton compliance, I understood that a TD could be fitted upto a 2006 but not beyond.
I will give Brett from 4wd a call tomorrow Nic and ask specifically about these dates. He does a heap of conversions. Ghee is that means you are limited to finding a written off car or engine out of a 2004 or later the pool just got very shallow!!
I will ask the question for you mate and see about a price from him for supply only.

Ok guys in Vic the adr's the car has to meet is for what ever is newer so, if the car is 04 and the motor is 2000 the car must emit no more emissions as the original motor did in '04 BUT if the car is '04 and the motor is '06 the car must now put out the same emissions as the motor did in when it came out from factory in '06. Thats my understanding of those rules.
I am also under the impression that cars the were opted with a motor, ie td42t you can change it from zd, rd, tb to the td without needing and engineers cert.

Man that sucks :(. What about a rebuilt ZD30 with full NADS done at the time of the motor install. Might be cheaper alternative than a conversion, as long as that keeps the grenade pin in for the rest of it's life.

Pretty well what i said too Mat. he was quoted $4k for a ZD30 so this is a Bargain. If it lasts a Year at least he is driving the car. Let it blow and then go the TD42 with the money he saves. At least he is driving. Win! Cheap! Running.

Bugger! what was wrong with it? Just rings and bearings? is it cheaper to reco this engine than your original motor? Was it down on compression?

so his words were because i paid so little for it, and because of the exterior condition of the motor (poorly weathered, most of the holes etc not sealed, mud in places) he says he could put it in but there are no guarantees that the motor is gonna work after the install, and could end up costing me more money. i kind of agree with him, reco the motor, get it done properly the first time, NADS it straight away, and i should have a nice reliable car. as a rough timeframe, im seeing late feb as a completion date, being so close to christmas and all. although i could be wrong and the turn around time could be quicker than i think.

hows your car going mate?
Yeah good mate.... its funny because almost as soon as I had my car sorted I thought of both you and George and if you guys will be on the road anytime soon..
I really hope this sorts itself mate as I kind of know what you are going through.... its stuff that is almost unnecessary to be worrying about.
The one thing that plays on your mind the most is am I doing the right thing.

mate, for me its not about am i doing the right thing, i know its the only thing i can do... i just bought the bloody thing for 18k, if i got rid of it i would make a massive loss within 12 months of owning the thing. the only thing that worries me, like everyone, is "How am i going to afford this" im trying to change my career, and in doing so will be taking a massive pay cut, and things are tight enough as it is at the moment. i could put off the career change but that is only gonna affect me more in the long run. on top of that i have a wedding and engagement party to save up and pay for within the next 15 months. ive got a tough time ahead i know that much.

Mate sort your career out first.
You need to be reasonably happy at work. As long as you can get there using any car. You mentioned wedding, don't forget kids, that there is another expense.
The fun of using a 4x4 for what its meant for will come.
I waited 4 years to get back into a 4x4, but my backyard is just about finished. The patrol is still a stockie, but I've just about saved enough for springs.
There's always going to be something just need to work out wants v needs.
I'm a believer that things will work out, but......
All in good time

hey jason,
its at ANOTHER mechanic, he is a diesel specialist, he has finally started the work. the plan of attack from him is:
send away and test/recondition injector pump and replace if needed
replace cooked piston, and check for other damage and replace as needed.
refit NADS kit and start with a nice fresh motor
budget has gone up (injector pump could be an expensive bit) but at least there is some movement on the whole ordeal. hes closed for chrissy, and returns on the 5th, no idea on ETA at the moment, but keeping my fingers crossed for the meetup on australia day.
cheers,
Nic

yep this guy is old school, hes an old wog fella, seemed pretty upfront about everything, and everything he said made sense, not just upselling etc. i asked him about a motor conversion but he said he wouldnt do it, he said too hard to source parts in the future, he said keep it original, get everything working properly and start with a nice solid motor from fresh and i will not have the grenade problem. he seemed to think that the injector pump was the main contributor in the grenade problem and having at tested and replaced or reco'ed will sort out that shit for good =D

Good decision re building your motor and not going done the conversion path.
Too many things to go wrong let alone what parts fit where, Trust me I know.
Ill never do a motor swap again. Looking forward to your comments when you
have your NEW ride back on the road
Just read through this thread one thing keeps popping up in regards to NADS.
Everyone is going by Mudski's figures problem is he drives a manual so revs
are completely different to an auto. Not putting Mark down or anything just saying
we are not comparing the same thing, Ive been driving around lately
[burbs] in the lower range on the auto which is more in line with the Manual.
Egt's dont go over 200c , so when you set the dawes up with your new motor
this might give you something to think about, set cruising boost to revs not KPH
I made the same mistake

would i be correct in assuiming that this (https://www.dencodiesel.com/diesel-injector-pumps/4913-exchange-fuel-pump-nissan-zd30-patrol-3ltr.html)is the correct injector pump for my patrol? if so can any on the diesel pros on here(like nissanewby) advise if its any good? i believe that either my pump will be reconditioned or replaced by denco(who my mechanic swears by) but he said they were very dear. truth be told i hadnt looked up the price till now, and reckon that price isnt too bad, i had expected alot more from the way he was talking lol

Strange it sais for Patrol in the heading and then Nivara in the description. I reckon you might have to check the number on the pump...but what would I know so don't listen to me...hahaha

18th February 2015, 10:46 PM
You have to make sure it is correct model. There was a change over from Zexel to Bosch unit with corresponding ECU change as well around 2004 series 3 to 4.
Navara has lower power output as well, MAF less tune and fixed geometry turbo so fuelling is different to Patrols.

I've just read through your post Rusty and I've bought a Series IV Patrol with a rebuilt long motor. I was told the motor was cooked thus requiring a new one.
I've had a couple of thing goes wrong with it, the main one was front crank seal leaking and Starter motor. It never had any NADS installed except for the EGR plate but having the needle valve has made a big difference to the engine.
One thing i would put on your shopping list is a new MAF sensor. Mine wasn't throwing any codes but it was very doughy down low and after putting in a new one, it made a world of different.
The ZD30 isn't too bad of an engine but they don't like high exhaust temps. I hope you hear you're back on the road soon and enjoy what is an awesome 4x4.
BTW I have an auto too and coupled to a ZD30 is a great combo
