this gq i have with a 4.2 efi every morning when i go to start it it just cranks over and no fire then after a couple of turns trying to start it fires a couple times. and then it will finally start takes about a minute and boy does it use some juice, i have not got those figures yet but im estimating about 25l per hundred has non genuine rotor and and cap and filter but it seems the fuel is draining away while it sits overnight. kev

Is it dual fuel? My old one was weird, if it sat overnight you had to start it on whichever fuel you weren't using when you stopped. So if you pulled up on petrol then it would be hard to start on petrol but would fire instantly on LPG, and same the other way.

Unfortunately that fuel consumption is just the nature of the beast. It's a big lazy motor pulling a heavy brick along with it.

Could it be because the timing is out i was using alot of fuel before I got the timing sorted could that possibly be the problem for both issues

Check your fuel pressure after the fuel filter with an inline gauge, should be 40 psi. Grab a timing light and check your timing is set at 10degrees before top dead center. Tps voltage should be at 0.4v at idle. Check that your maf is serviceable.

hi kevin larry here. had the same problem with my tb42efi. checked everything, fuel pump, air flow leaks etc.. the problem was only dirty injectors. the crap sits on the needle and it or they leak inside the chamber. the mixture ratio is then out and its hard to start. cost me $300 for a cleaning at 374.000 kms and now starts first pop just try that

thanks larry ill be up for that no problem

Yep I did the injectors and I also got the timing adjusted recently I have gone from 22-25l to 13-15l but I also did a new MAF and TPS for good measure it was an overkill I know but better fuel.

hi kev. larry again. i forgot to mention you that it was a normal mechanic who did the cleaning. he basically removed 1/2 the plenum chamber-top- and then removd the common rail. he replaced also the 2 o-rings on each side of the injector between the rail and manifold. mine where cracked and probably letting a bit of air in.
so yu dont need to go to an''injector specialist '' who might rank up the price...
tell me what yu found have a good one larry

ok part of my problem fixed and if it wasn't happening to me I would not believe it so the hard starting has disappeared. and this is how I fixed it so 1 rocker was very noisy and a mate told me to put a bottle of lifter free or clean in with and oil change so I done ive done 80 klms since. now no more rocker noise and starts normal couple of turns and away she goes,as I said if it didn't happen infront me you got no chance of me believing it. so im guessing with the lifter sticking I had no compression. now its still running a bit rough under load so ill get the injectors done, my mate told me he will get them done at afi for about 20 each. that's next

grab some vacuum gauges and put them on , they will show you everything you need to know
A very good diagnostic tool

update o2 sensor changed made little difference and I changed the coolant temp sensor on Friday (genuine) done the timing it was on ten degrees put it up to 12 degrees as it had a small flat spot right at the bottom. and now the thing goes hard its an absolute shock the power increase and also fuel is down ill post how much when I fuel up, but I can already see its going to be quite substantial. next step give it a good flogging with some injector clean and decarbonise the top see what that can do as well.
