View Full Version : Nissanpatrol.com.au sand flags
Winnie

Hey guys, I'm going to the printers after work today to see about getting these sand flags made. (once Andy sends me the logo!)
I'm after numbers so we can get better pricing. It will be the flag only, you will have to sort out a pole for yourself. These will be awesome for the Simpson trip and it would be great to have every car with one. There is a poll on this thread so PLEASE vote for how many you would like and don't just post it in the replies.
Thanks all.

Be careful what material you print in on as even fluro orange ripstop will fray badly and crack and tear
Best material is the fluro shade cloth material with a stitched edge and silver reflective cross.
I had some printed years ago for the Birdsville servo, worked out at about $6 a flag just to print

Not a clue. Surely not more than $50 and I was hoping more around $20-30 + freight

And how would you print the logo on that? I was thinking PVC canvas.

Are you printing the sand flag its self or just a flag for the convoy
Desert flags need to be hi-vis
I have used pcv canvas.
the trailing edge of the flag flaps like a whip that's why Co. like ARB use Hi-Vis shade cloth it wont rip

We are printing the forum logo onto the flag.

Good job Winnie. The regs for the flag size are in a link that Roffy posted into the meetup thread mate. Have a look there bud. I voted for 1 but may be convinced to grab 2 if the price is right

Just pointing out if you use the wrong material it will rip to shreds after 2-3 k.
But you're the one in the know apparently. I made these, so just thought you needed some help
I'll bow out and a wait the end result

Absolutely, you don't have to be coming to the Simpson to get one or ten.

PVC canvas should be fine. With the edges, folded, sewn and glued don't you think? By the sounds of it John you're happy to take over here so I'll just let you sort it out then.
Like this. @AB how would I go with punching two eyelets in each? So they can be cable tied or whatever to the poles.

Yep you'd have to do a set up for each flag. That's like 50-70 bucks if screen printed

Yes I can do that but we need a punch to punch holes I only have punch to put on eyelets on existing holes.
We could however get some pipe to the right size , file it sharp and punch that would work.

This is a reply from a mining supplier. I enquired about the mesh flags.
Hi Chris
*
Thank you for your enquiry.* We have had many request in the past for what you are after and have advised against it, due to the cost V the very short life of the flag. **First of all, unfortunately, all our flags come with the reflective cross due to mining spec's, and they are also made of mesh high vis material which makes printing almost impossible.* From the printing trials we have done, it is very difficult to see from any distance.
*
The only way to add your logo, is to sew a solid piece of material with your screen printed logo onto the flag, which in turn may cause other problems.**** Basically, the mesh reduces the wind resistance allowing the wind to travel through the flag rather than along each side.* Wind movement along each side causes excessive flapping of the trailing edge which then leads to fraying.* By adding a sewn patch to each side will upset the air flow and destroy the flag in no time.
*
A website company (I won't mention who) *wanted a logo flag to offer with our flag poles which they sell, I explained the issues, they went ahead and did it anyway and the feedback from customers was not good.* Anyway, we can offer our flags, but cannot recommend printing directly onto it or adding a logo patch as the flag won't last.* Let me now if you wish to pursue it further, I can then work out a price for you

Ok, how long will you guys actually have the flags up for? A week, two? I'm wondering if the canvas ones might just hang in there for long enough?
Even if they are getting tattered by the end at least they'll have served their purpose and they'll look great hanging on the wall
threedogs
4th April 2014, 03:40 PM
its tough as for its designed purpose, it just can't hack the constant high speed
whipping it just tears it to shreds... I should have examples here I'll look later.
If you only use it for the slower desert sections only it may as Lucas says last the crossing.
Doesn't take long for them to self destruct though, Its the flapping that kills it

Lorraine has advised that maybe Nylon Lycra will do the Job.
Stretchy and can get in Bright Pink.
Winnie if you PM me your address Lorraine said that she would send you a sample for you to take to the Printer.
Lorraine has 1500mm wide by 900mm in Bright Pink which you can have
Then you can all be a MAMIL (middle Aged Men in Lycra
Winnie
4th April 2014, 03:57 PM
They're not for driving at high speeds... Mine will be on while we're in the desert (5 days tops yeah) and then put on the wall like Lucas said.
The kulkyne ones are not big enough to meet requirements, I know it's very unlikely but I would hate for us all to show up and be fined or whatever they do about it

The last 3 trips I have done with a flag have been
, 1 week on the beach in Beachport often at high speed, 1 week in the centre on the Ghan Heritage trail often at high speed, 10 days on the Madigan Line at fairly slow speed but lots of impact on trees. The "flag" that I have used is a square cotton face washer size red rag. Zip tied to a fishing rod. I bought a pack of red rags from Super cheap and just used one and it did great! A little frayed now but did the trips, all the trips with ease.
We need something g for the desert crossing only. 30 to 40km/h . It will hold up fine I reckon. Then on the wall for nxt time. If they are cheap enough then on the wall and use a fresh one for next time if needed.

does any one know what specs etc are required for a desert crossing, I was told fines may be inforced, not 100% on that though.
To stop your flag flogging its self out under concave the trailing edge, it may slow down the self destruction effect they have.
I would imagine the new regs would require Hi-Vis flags but hopefully it will be mine spec
