Hey guys,

Today my engine arrived for my TD42T swap, and turns out the supplier has kind of screwed me.

After numerous phonecalls, I was promised that the engine had a "fully manual" injection pump. and the photos I was sent didn't give me a definitive yes/no.

any ways turns out my TD42T is infact a TD42TDi.

This leaves me with the question of what to do regarding the pump, the options i can think of are as follows;

1. run it as is and not connect up TPS or Timing solenoid. and set timing to around .67 ($0) (is it possible to just strip the electrical components off the pump?)

2. Exchange unit for a rebuilt boost compensated TD42T pump (around $1200-$1500)

3. Source TD42TDi ECU & work that into my vehicle ($???, but heaps of extra work)

I have tried searching, but cant find a solid answer.

I agree - it is much easier to go down the non-ECU controlled route ..... but you are in a bit of a bind ...

I don't want to tell you how to suck eggs, but have you tried asking the Engine Supplier for the matching ECU out of the vehicle, since he supplied it, and the loom too although he would want payment for the loom I would think....

As a second option, if it is too hard / costly, they should take the engine back too

Engine was freighted Brisbane to Adelaide, and I'm happy with the engine, so returning it is not really an option.

I will contact the vendor tomorrow, just to see what sort of response I get.

Although looking at the diagrams, working the ECM into the ZD30 swap will be a complete nightmare.

I think either a S/H pump, or finding a diesel specialist, preferably in Adelaide, that will exchange the TDi pump (maybe even throw them the old ZD30 pump as a sweetener) for the boost compensated manual pump is going to be the best solution.

Fair enough too - once you have one in your hands, it is hard to let go.

Lets hope it works out easier than it looks.....

I thought a few of the guys recently bypassed the tps as it was failing??

Is this an option here..

Kustom Killa looms may have a plug and play loom.
I believe they are located in Melbourne

Ring 03 5382 5477 and ask Allan, he n is just up the road from you and may be able to assist you. Injectors are his thing. He does pumps from all over the country.

Cheers for the suggestions guys,

I have a reco TD42T pump arriving today, I got lucky and found someone that was willing to take the TD42Ti & ZD30DDTI pumps as cores, and gave me a great price as my work has an account with them.

I will post a full conversion thread once its all in there & running.:Yahoo!:

Looking forward to hearing how you get on bud as this is something I would love to do to my GU if and when I have the time and money (could do with that lottery win anytime now! Haha)

Just an update: TD42T pump was installed without any dramas, on advice from the supplier was timed to .74 @ TDC. my 3" Stainless exhaust arrived also.

Engine had a dry fit yesterday, and I tack welded the new chassis brackets in.

Mobile welder came past today and welded the brackets in for me. I also fitted up the rear section of exhaust, which fit like a glove. Clutch went on and engine went in (massive PITA to line up clutch/trans/engine).

Jobs for tomorrow are to;
Bolt on starter
Fit up dump pipe and rest of exhaust
engine mounts
new clutch slave & bleed system
fit alternator
belts hoses and filters
refit airbox
fit/plumb intercooler
connect power steering
fit radiator & heater hoses
source accelerator cable

Monday evening should be a few wires vac & fuel lines to set up (I'm hoping i can get the idle up working for A/C & heat switch)

The once she is running, it's off to the A/C guys to get some hoses made & regassed :D

So, not much to go, my thoughts are that by Tuesday night she will be running & drivable.

So why the desperate need for access 2 download the manuals.

I assume you have a question you could post up if you need the manual

Needed to print off wiring diagrams, rather than bastardize the ones in my workshop manual.

Work cut progress short today & yesterday, although I am inching closer and closer, tomorrow is going to be time to wire up, and give it a run (hopefully)... the rad hoses I had ordered from work were incorrect, so will have to get that rectified.

Wiring was done today (apart from tacho module),

Injectors were bled, and she runs :)

do the engine mounts have to be changed much? are there any problems with registering to vehicle?

Hello,
I'm not going to open a new tread because I've got exactly the same situation - dead ZD30 and a brand "new" TD42Ti engine without ECU available. The difference is that in Poland those engines are very rare so availability of used parts is not very high.

Could you guys advice which way of sorting the problem of pump is the easiest? Is it possible to buy ECU anywhere?

anyone can pay a little attention please? on another forum i've read something about converting electric/electronic pump into fully mechanical by replacinf the head. is that solution posible? if yes - is it expensive? and are the parts available easily or i should for it next half a year?

The td42 has a mechanical fuel pump which runs off gears from the crank, the same way the valve cam does.

So any aftermarket or electronic fuel pump won't be needed to supply the motor.
You just need to join main pickup line to the pump via a fuel filter.

As for ecu I'm unsure. I don't thing the td42 needs one as it's all mechanical and vacuum.
Unless you guys have a different newer variant over there? Here in aus they stopped importing the td42 due to emmision controls nearly 10 years ago..

So is a TD42ti electronic pump ?
I'm just starting to learn about 42s my self, so I'll be keeping threads like this under close watch.

I believe the TD42TI has a semi-electronic pump.

The latest TD42Ti's had a small amount of electronics. These are the td42's that came factory turbo and intercooled. Using a couple of sensors and inputs there is internal timing control of the injector pump obviously dependant on the said inputs. These engines also had a basic egr setup on them as well which utilizes the same ecu for the pump control.

They had electronics from late 03 to there aus demise in 06.

Hi,

this is what I already read on this formu. We call it a semi electronic pump or whatever. What I understand is that to propoer functioning this pump needs to be connected to the ECU. Now my question is - what are the options to make it work. What was writen in different threads - the best would be to replace the pump to the one from TD42T. Are there any other options?

thanks
