My daughter who just had the baby had to put her French Bulldog down today. The poor bugger had a number of spinal abnormalities that were giving him pain. We were assured that spinal surgery for the neck area would alleviate the majority of the pain, and the remainder could be handled with anti-inflammatory drugs, so we went ahead on the basis he would be up and about, but kept quiet for 2 weeks. Well , 8 weeks later we finally got him over the neck surgery, only for him to collapse from the other spinal issues which could only be controlled with pain relief, so strong he would be asleep the whole time - anti inflamms were of no use - unfortunately this all happened last night and he was rushed to an emerg vet and it was time to say goodbye to the little champ this morning. First vet didn't quite get the balance of injury management right unfortunately, as 'in hindsight' we should not have put him thru the agony of the neck surgery - but you try to keep them don't you. RIP Hugo.

For the first time in over 60 years I don't have a dog.
We said our final goodbye to KEL on Wednesday, another loyal and faithful companion for fourteen years. He was also a rescue dog and he was part of the family, loyal, faithful (but would swap that for food), and a great companion.
He deteriorated in the last twelve months with failing eyesight and hearing but that never stopped him from enjoying life. Earlier this year at his annual check-up we found he had more serious issues and we knew we didn't have long. We always agreed that we wouldn't let him suffer and keep him alive for our sake.
His end was very peaceful and the vet allowed us both to be there and hold him while he was euthanised. We've always agreed that we'd never just drop the dogs off and leave them with a stranger at the end.
The place is full of reminders of him and it's a pretty sad time, he loved everyone (except cats) and the grandkids loved him.
Lead a great life with us and will be sadly missed, goodbye KEL.

He is bit sorry at the moment but so lucky.
Happens too often Mark and our best mates find it hard to learn not to hassle them.
Red would do a runner and chase the hoppers about, but one day she found a male Roo sleeping under a tree, should have not disturbed the snoozer, as it woke and lashed out ripping her along inner rear thigh to the bone and luckily she did walk again. Her mother was coached into a dam by a wallaby, fought it out, neither would not give up and resulted in both drowning. Had my boots off one day to go into the dam to get dog, don't really know how, looked up and dog was swimming to bank_relief.

MB No specific local mob of note here Mark, so many to count sometimes, mixed thru with red neck and swamp wallaby. Get the upstart roos sparing among themselves and when frustrated attempt to take it out on the local vegetation.
The girls visit looking for quiet place to shelter on windy days with young-ins in pouch. All keep our grasses in check, so much pressure and with past drought is hard for the natives to get growth on _ spring might turn it around after the recent rains.

The possibility of a 'forever home' arose for Gina & this morning was the day she left us both with tear stained faces. She has been our constant companion for almost 7 months. I knew MrsTea would cry, but my uncontrollable blubbering was (& still is) unexpected. I awoke at 5am to the realisation she would soon be gone & that I had not said my goodbyes to her, so she had an earlier than usual morning walk chasing the ball that she loves so much. Our 'job' was to take her from 'failed working dog' to 'pot licker' - something she had adapted to with ease. Bon voyage little doggie.😭 xxxxxxxxxxxxx

MB To hopefully avoid in house mishaps, need to take the boy outside before putting your head down for the night and when he pees out side, enforce it by saying have a pee "or what ever to coincide with the activity" and tell him he is a good boy. Could get Jimmy Bidja to pee on command (most times) and we now do it with our other 2 Kelpies before settling for the evening. Don't go hard discipline on em as does more harm than good.
All 4 Kelpies we have had, especially under 10 yrs of age, would do runners at times, chase and round up all things that run/hop and they found it hard to learn of the danger especially with big hoppers. Hard work but they need supervision and teach them to leave it (start with food / treats). Need a large enclosed yard for unsupervised control. Our two now 14 yr old are satisfied to just hang around close by (this is good).
Not a fan on shock training aids, did buy one similar but was never used. Having Red and her 3 pups for 14-15 yrs was a handful but we do miss them not being all together. Now there is only the two remaining/great mates (but getting older).
Found this old pic the other night (4 x full of life). From left: Red_mum(RIP), Jimmy Bidja(RIP), now Al and Chockie both with us.

Yes, a flashback to happier days in 2012 when I was still happily married with Furkids. The ex wife used to also run Great Dame rescue NSW so we had a few danes , sadly Scooby signed his own warrant though, when he bit the ex wife's new boyfriend on the arse while he was shagging her ( while I was away on a Middle East deployment in 2014) Clearly the divorce followed. (i did not find out about the all the details until a year later after she had been paid out and moved out).
Sadly though for Danes and other giant breeds like them they rarely get past 10 years old, so even if that had not have occurred Scooby would have passed on by now as well.
I have not been able to bring myself around to having another pet in my life, but now I got back yard buddies instead that I feed833308333183332
They are kind of like cats in a way. In the warmer months they will climb all over me and stalk me in the yard when they are hungry, but once you have fed them, they are not interested in you again until they are hungry again.

Word of warning, tucker wise [emoji51]
Haven’t fed any of our faithful pooch’s over the years ‘PAL’ tin cans for a very long time....disastrous ramifications [emoji23]
Usually a mix of quality loaf or meat scraps topped up with Supercoat suitable breed dry food these days with success[emoji106][emoji106]
Local IGA was out of Supercoat ‘Large Breed’ last week so cheapskated with a bag of ‘PAL’ dry instead.
Let’s just say I may need to replace the GQ utes interior linings tomorrow as they are horribly stench impregnated with old Pal/Mates arse odour now.......never again buying anything PAL [emoji2961]

Back in the Day when life was still Good, the wife (now ex wife) used to run Great Dane Rescue NSW, and we had afew Danes of our own, plus the Boxer, and a managary of rescue Danes and Dane Crosses over the years.
Now the staple for their diet was Blackhawk Kibble grain free(so we alternated the lamb and rice, chicken and rice, Fish and Potato...they would not touch the kangaroo ...the rescies did, ours were too fussy). There are different varieties for puppy, adult, working dog and dogs needing diets to loose lard.
https://www.petcircle.com.au/black-hawk
The trick with this is to get a really decent 25 Kg drum with an air tight lid, that keeps the kibble crunchy and fresh for 30 days.
We would also supplement with turkey wings, thighs and drumsticks (local butcher would put some aside in bulk for 3 bux a kg for us), chicken frames and chicken wings (all uncooked, as cooked bones splinter and shatter and are no good for doggy digestion system) and marrow bones.
They never got the taste for roo or bunny, so we kept it on what they would eat and kept them healthy with shiny coats.
Now the trick is to get a great scoop (a diagonally cut in half 29 liter square drum with a long handle on it worked here) and long shovel, a 63 liter bunnings bin with lid and top quality glad garden bags (do not skimp on bag quality otherwise bin day when transplanting the baggy to the big bi is a tormenting experience). Once a day mine sweeping and clearance into the baggy lined bin, and sorted.
Plus keeping plastic shopping bags for poop patrol when doing walkies. Just passing on these tips as the dog rocks here were industrial scale:toot:
Cheers

Haha he really does not stop, and I promise you, it's not for lack of training, have spent a decent chunk of good coin trying to train him up, he is just extremely selective when he chooses to utilise that training [emoji35]
Still, a great boy around kids, extremely protective of family, less of land, which I'm ok with. I 100% trust him around my kids and that is all that matters. He will slow down the older he gets, and the kids will get bigger and keep his over active personality amused, it will all work out.http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/07/22.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/07/23.jpghttp://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/images/imported/2021/07/24.jpg

Our new family member, renamed her "CHOOKIE", was Cyprus??? American Bulldog, 2YR rescue, had her a week or so, still wearing the protective vest from the Vet post de-sexing. She's 40 kg, gentle as a kitten, came from a family with a young child, but timid and a vocal growler so needs a bit of socialisation and confidence. Instantly protective of the house and anyone inside it, takes about 10 minutes to get her used to a new person, so her size and demeanor on first greeting can be a bit intimidating. Previous owners are moving back to NZ and can't take her.844218442284423

Well sad and unexpected update. The wife was sitting on the edge with Chookie as she is a very powerful dog and came to us with some engrained character traits that were a lot to handle. We decided to visit my daughter in Bruthen and took Chookie down there, and they have an aging great dane who is the gentle mouse of the world. We introduced them to each other between a chicken wire fence and it was wagging and squealing from both sides, so brought together for the greet, and within 15 secs Chookie had the old bloke by the throat and then tore a piece from his ear by the time I could separate them. The great dane was bleeding like a pig, so rushed into Vet/surgery and has returned home with two open gashes and drains in his neck and a chunk missing from the ear. Whatever was said between those two was instant dislike and savagery, so its a side of her we just cant manage. We have contacted the rescue agency and a new home is being found for her now. Breaks my heart to be honest, as her other sides are sweet and gentle/playful, and the barking and growling can be resolved. I think she has been abused during her upbringing from a pup and she needs some specialist attention to correct this i am sure. Its going to be hard handing her over I can assure you, but you just can't tell what baggage is going to come with a rescue, and this is our third, but nothing ever like this.

We got my son a Rottie puppy for his 21st birthday. Koda was born about 3 months after his birthday. About 10 weeks later he was on a plane to out place in the Alice. Koda has been one of the smartest dogs I have had the pleasure to know. His need to please is outstanding. A real ambassador for his breed. This video is of him at about 14 weeks. He went on to do some amazing obedience training and passed his schutzhund training class.

First German Shepherd and best dog I've ever owned, still won't let me out of his sight.
Dodge"Dumb as Dogshit" Pit Bull likes to keep an eye on his old sparring partner and can't quite understand why Chew won't play fight these days.

Should be pretty easy...looks like he only needs to run about 10,000 miles a day...
His paws haven't touched the ground outside our yard yet. He gets his 3rd needle on Tuesday next week. After that it's +14 days, then we're out there in my Patrol, camping our little heart out. lol. He's HM (High Maintenance) at the moment. I have arms and hand scars to prove it. lol.
If there was such a thing, I'd say he was a 'text book puppy'. Definitely food driven, which helps with training. Living in the sticks, you have to be self-sufficient and there's not much he hasn't got. lol.

the evil twin
Wow, 13. I remember when you got him. Time flies. My last GSD was 35 years ago, and as I only work 9 days a month now, I've got the time and effort to put into him. On my 'break' it still takes me a day to whip him back into my gear, then we're good to go. lol.
We've also got a 11yo bitza, who's now got a new lease on life. Cyclone's bigger than him already, but the old one still gives him a run for his money, and they rough and tumble all the time. Got him from a breeder in South Oz and more than happy.
Take care and will try and catch up sooner rather than later.

RIP Whitie. Not a dog but our pet goat that acted as if she were a dog. We bought her and her daughter in 2004-5. They were both pregnant, so we think Whitie was around three to four years old when we got her.
