Not sure if this has been posted, couldn't find it.
From 16 March you must now have a fluro sand flag (3.5m above ground)on your vehicle if you want to cross the Simpson, check here (http://www.anfwdc.asn.au/news.php?id=93)

I used an old beach rod (two piece) with some material from a Hi Viz vest, ocky strapped to the bull bar, worked a treat.
Looked like this

I'm surprised the rules went with optional orange. I would think fluro green/yellow better in the sand!!!

Damn, I knew I shoulda bought stocks in flouro coloured flags!! Flouro Nissan Patrol.com flags would be a top idea as I only use red cloth on the dunes. The buggy club has bamboo poles which members can use. When I'm out there by myself I use an old surf rod. In some states the width of the pole on the front is to be taken into consideration, doesn't it?

I would have thought it was mandatory already?
And they must have just realised you can't trust everyone to have comon sense.

I think it was mandatory for the first car in a convoy.

Betcha that works too, I'm buggered if I'd get within visual range of your truck if your daks were flying from the masthead...

Your local TJM or 4x4 shop should sell the flag only,
as for the poles use a 13mm geo tent pole kit from K-Mart, Use two lengths off your roofrack
If anyone requires a mounting bracket for this style flag give me a PM ,
as I used too make 3 piece solid fibreglass flags, and have laser cut bracket plates here

The first time I crossed the Simpson I forgot to get a sand flag so I found a long palm frond at Dalhousie Ruins and taped a red rag on it.
In 2010 we came across a 4wd being driven by Swedish girls that had a red bra on the top of their pole.

It is better to mount on bullbar rather than roof rack, it will be seen first on the bullbar.

They tend to be too whippy on the bulbar I have found from feed back from club members,
Two sections on the roof rack is higher than say 4 pieces off the bulbar,
Just clamp or weld 150mm of 20x20x1.5 RHS with a bolt through the base to stop flag falling through
I then used a 3/4 flaring tool to flare top of RHS, it requires no pins clips etc to hold it in position.
Things don't fall up I've since redesigned the backing plate to accept smaller "U" bolts suitable for
roof racks, to stop flag falling through I drilled and fit a 1/8th roll pin

If you put it on the bullbar you can see it when going under trees etc.
Also you tend to see the flags of the cars in the convoy before you see the flag of the leader so I can understand why all cars now have to run flags

this is the bracket that will suit bull bar as well as roof rack.
UHF would be your best option travelling in dune country.
Not much difference between bull bar or roof mounted flag IMo
