Lots of threads on this subject, lots of different opinions too, synthetic is good, main thing is to make Shure the oil meets Nissan specs.

Patrolman,

The factory recommended oil is actually Semi-Synthetic, and there are a few oil experts that recommend sticking with the same type of oil, and not changing around to different types every time you change your oil .....

I can't really see the difference myself though, but here is the Nissan recommended oil I used last time.

I have a '02 model from new.

After first service, I've run Castrol Magnatec Professional Full Synthetic 5.40
Was a different oil earlier but still full synth.
These grade oils are developed for LIGHT High rev Diesels. NOT truck engines.

I rang Castrol Tech Services first. Yrs ago to check. This oil I use in Patrol. Wife's '08 Honda Civic.
and my 2010 Isuzu D-Max 3 ltr.

Prior to the Full Synthetic. I always used the Magnatec Semi Synth for yrs.

Anybody changing oils should ALWAYS ring whoever it is "Tech Services" first.
They all have a full listing of all oils for all motors.
And ALWAYS run the same oil every time. Unless changing for some reason. Then stick to that one.

Different Mfg's, with same grades of oil. ALL have different additives, and they can conflict.

For sale $17000. (sold caravan) 0429-851-667

'02 3 ltr ST. Pewter Grey 166k on clock.

NEVER been off road. NEVER been on beaches. Bought and used solely as legal tug for 6.5mtr caravan.
D'Tronic Chip. Snorkel, Exhaust, Bull bar\Ramsey winch. solid flywheel\H\D Clutch. 2in lift. King coils. EFS H\D Shockers. Suspension orthopaedic seat. Redarc twin battery system.
Garmin 760 GPS with latest mapping.

Whoops. Also new Welded Intercooler 4000km ago.
. Exh Manifold removed\refaced. New exh Gasket.

Intercooler split on pressed seam. and they have a rep of exh gasket going at No 1 around 170ish km so I did it while I had the Cooler off. (just in case)

G'day Patrolman,
I've used Castrol Delo 400 15/40 for about 400K without any problem.
If you'd like to spend a month or three, look up 'engine oil' in the search panel up at the top of the page.
If you stick to one known brand you'll not generally make a mistake.
Regards
Col

Instead of creating yet another what oil. Thought I'd just tag on to the latest one.

So it seems most go for Caltex Delo 400 - but which one??
Delo 400 LE SAE 10W-30
Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40
Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40
Delo 400 NG SAE 15W-40
Delo 400 XLE Synblend SAE 10W-30
Delo 400 XLE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 (Available soon)

Well ok, I'm guessing no one goes for the 5/10-30W and only 15W-40, but there's a few varieties to chose from.

I used Caltex's Find the right Oil and it comes up with HAVOLINE SYNTHETIC BLEND (Hmm same search as the Valvoline site)

Given you can't run in to places like Supercrap to buy Delo 400, what do you do if you're out and about with no Delo 400 on hand and need to top up? (i.e. wife took out the oil to fit the make-up bag in).

Ok after more googling. It appears Delo 400 Multigrade SAE 15W-40 is the one.

Thought I'd ask my mechanic what they use - Valvoline Super Diesel. Thought that was low ash though, which is a no no for the Jap diesel motors (more suited to those with a DPF)

Though looking at the specs:
Approvals and Performance
SAE 15W-40, API CH-4, SJ, ACEA A3/B3/E5, MIL-L-2104F, MIL-L-46152E, MACK EOM–PLUS, VOLVO VDS, VDS-2, GLOBAL DHD-1, JASO DH-1

or am I just better off dropping in a 20L drum of Delo 400 and get them to use that on larger services to play safe (given I'd say 70%+ use Delo here).
