Hi guys, I have noticed recently that I have an engine rattle or knock whilst taking of going through the gears from 2nd and 3rd more so at 2000rpm to 3000rpm. Thinking it maybe the fuel pump or maybe piston slap? It's a 3ltr, has 210k on the clock, doesn't use oil recently had a new head and injectors. To be honest. Normally have the radio going so never heard it previously. Is this normal or should I be worried?

I would be thinking more along the lines that the Dual Mass Flywheel is cracked.....

I was thinking of trying the 2stroke oil see if it makes a difference threedogs.

Happygtu, not sure about the flywheel? Would that be more of a vibration if it was? This is more of a fluttering knock or rattle. I'm hoping it's just the typical diesel rattle it's just that I haven't heard it before in the troll. Got a big trip next year in the planning and want to make sure it's good to go..

Could it be the heat shield on your dump pipe,
they are known to make a noise, easy to check

If it is definitely engine noise, it may be something like the Timing Chain Tensioner then .... I would say it would be best to get it checked before your big trip

You would hope the timing gear was done when the head got replaced.. starting to think its fuel related as in pump or injector noise. It only seems to do it with a heavy right foot. Its not the dump pipe gaurd threedogs, although it does vibrate on ocasions due to the 3" pipe.

Hi Badball, just seeing if this was resolved for you? My 2007 3lt has exactly the same symptoms. A rattle at 2000rpm when going through all gears except 1-2, a rattle on first start,

Don't know what happened there...

Was just saying that she was low on oil so I topped her up but still the rattle persists. All belts and fans seem in good nick. The rattle is always whole accelerating past 2000rpm when changing between gears from 3rd gear onwards.
Any solutions to your problems Badball?

Mine has this rattle only when cold on acceleration. As it warms up it stops. Interested to know what it is also.

Hey mate,
What kind of oil is this?
It's meant for motorbikes?
Is it 2 stroke oil?
How does this help?

Ok, cool. Diesel engines generally sound rattly to me.
My RB30 makes hydraulic lifter rattle for few seconds on cold start.
It wasn't like that before. It started after I did the head and the gasket couple of years ago.
I should've lubricated the cam lifters with proper cam lube before I put all together, but I didn't.
Must have caused some wear from initial dryness.
Diesel engines are generally noisier anyway.
I didn't think there's anything we could do to reduce the noise.
