To be totally honest the reason I installed my catch can on my 2011 gu patrol was through reading about them on this forum..... When i first installed it( about 3000 km ago) I kept checking it and really couldn't see what it was doing so I stopped looking at it and left the drain rolled up and figured I would wait a few 1000 Kms and see what it looks like.....
Well on Friday I decided to have a look and if anything drain it.... And to my surprise this is what came out...

Really really happy I did it now...

What catch can? If it was a provent then it takes a little while for the filter to soak up a bit of oil before it starts collecting in the drain.

A catch can is like and egr block. Every diesel should have one...

Stops blow by dirtying the maf sensor which sends bad signals in regards to air fuel ration causing piston melting in extreme cases, and putting oily air into the intake causing carbon build up

Thought I'd add to this thread. Spent most of today putting back the new intercooler plumbing and fitting a provent catch can. Drove around for an hour, opened up the catch can and there is already a mist of oil on the inside. Taking a peak inside the intercooler, and very nice and clean. No oil residue yet.

Thanks Hodge, that's another thing I have to do.

Here's a pic of how much oil the Can catch's. This was a 6k'ish service too.

As to the above question. I have some coming. My last lot sold quicker than expected, Albeit Provent copies, they are a fair bit cheaper. I'm running one and have been since I bought the car around 20 months ago. Still works, the plastic housing hasn't cracked, filter works (obviously), the pressure relief valve spring is still there and hasn't dropped out or blocked up.

Its amazing how much oil is actually going back into the air intake when you see this all come out. I wash my filter every service too so it's nice and clean for the next 6thou.

Will provent stop oil mist completely ? I'm not sure, but my IC is still slightly coated in oily mist long after provent was fitted. Not as much as without the catch can, but I'm pretty sure it's coated the new IC with a bit of oil. Catch can is definitely "catching" as there is a puddle of oil accumulated in the can.

All depends on the filter, the best prevention is to not let any engine blow by back into the engine at any time!

Coming from sports car, though highly illegal, alot of us guys tend to just vent the catch can into the atmo, its the best thing to do, and will pro long the life of the engine by miles..... especially on any cars that run a Air flow meters, Skylines, Evo's, wrx etc etc

Seeing how much oil mist and blow by coming from any engine, especially on a diesel, Zd30 and TD42, its incredible how nissan can let this happen, There was a thing us Honda turbo guys used to do to pass it legally, and that was to let the exhaust do the suction and keep it legal, much like a EGR, instead of venting back into the engine, we would re-route it and vent it back into the exhaust, it makes more sense and 9/10 would make it more legal than venting it into the atmo, this scavaging effect and will often be the better solution as it promotes a negative pressure in the crank case and oil catch can pulling all the fumes out and burning it in the exhaust rather than in the engine, though i have not actually seen anyone do it on a commercial vehicle it can be done

The 4.2's are a different beast. Legally you are better off having one and also for your engine as they do work.

Thanks, I knew about the benefits of having one on a skyline but as the td42 is very simply I wasn't sure. Another add to the list LOL
