G'day all

ok guys i've had some recent belt squeeking/ripped ribs on fan belt including the new one i put on 2 weeks ago.. now i have narrowed it down to definetly being the alternator pulley (wasnt sure between tensioner, aircon, or alternator) and not sure which pulley to replace it with i have found two options so far one with all the bells and whistles and a standard replacement. any experience with either or used something else would love to hear about it.

on a side note a little story for whoever is interested in the extra read/laugh after changing this belt 2 weeks ago and driving about 20kms before pulling into a mates place. i had walked away from the car for about 5 minutes leaving it idling while visiting him in the shed. upon return i heard a *whack whack whack*. running to turn the ignition of a pop the bonnet i found this new belt had ripped 2 ribs of while at idle... so underneath the hot engine bay burning hands and swearing as usual i removed the wasted ribs and decided to take her home. must of gotten about 200 metres down the road when the lights on the dash came on car died and would not start.. i could see it had shredded another two ribs but couldnt see how that would stop it from starting.. turns out it had flicked the belt into the wiring harness next to the airbox and exposed all the wires. F#$K Shitballs. towed back to my mates place and re taped the wires but still no fire.. after more searching and swearing find out it had blown a fuse aswell.. so yeah awesome sunday afternoon/night this turned into lol.

I would put money on the tensioner starting to fail. Check the pulley bearing on the tensioner to see if it spins nice and there is no play. Also the little shocker on the tensioner has bushes in either end of it. If they are worn the wont work as it should. With the alternator, if the pulley spins free one way and engages the other way and feels good then I would say its fine. The A/C pump, there is an idler bearing in the pulley, take the belt off and see if that spins nice and free too and there is no play in it. I had to replace the bearing in my a/c pump's pulley...

i had checked them all when i had the belt off and the all seemed fine apart from the squeek in the alternator i will check it again this weekend, the tensioner was the first thing i checked and couldnt fault it.. plus im have a bearing noise sometimes on startup which will disappear about 10 secs after start up which lead me to the alternator pulley.
but i will double check this weekend before forking out more money.

When my alternator pulley failed I was able to see the pulley moving forward and backwards on the shaft when the engine was running.

None of the ribs on my belt failed when this happened.

Not sure why only two ribs failed on your belt. I would double check all pulleys for possible damage/sharp edges or even a small stone caught in one of the grooves.

If it's the alternator pulley that is the problem I wouldn't bother replacing it. You can pick up replace alternators from places like Repco or Ashdowns with solid pulleys.

If you do decide to just replace the original pulley you will also require a special tool to R&R it.

With micro v belts if you strip ribs from the belt its from misalignment. Or something had hit the belt. Going from my experiences working with Gates many moon ago. If a pulley seizes usually the belt with have burn marks on it. Have a look at what Yendor has said. Also get under the car and try to check if the pulleys are are all aligned. If you can get a hold of a laser alignment tool it would make things easier.

i have read somewhere that fitting the solid pulley can be bad if your model was made for the clutch type??
and yeah i was looking at the price of new ones vs the swap etc.. my old man mentioned he has the tool to R&R so no problems there just deciding whether to put the nice overrun pulley or standard.

@mudski yeah mate just checked it the and looks like the belt moves forward slightly from the alternator down the the aircon and i dont have any burn marks on the belt :-s might just be out of line enough to cause a couple ribs to have jumped over the lip..??

Yeah I read a lot of theories why it might not be a good idea to fit a solid pulley.

I also read a lot of post from people who had installed the solid pulley and had no problems.

It's your call.

Ive change the alternator pulley last month..it give squicking noise..like metal to metal..turn out to be the alternator pulley..its a clutch type..after opening the alternator..the inner bearing was bad also..i think it all started from the inner bearing then it effect the clutch pulley..so change the pulley and the bearing..no more squicking..
