I have read mention several times to catch cans in relation to turbo's/intercoolers.
Can someone please explain what they are and where they are installed etc.
Thanks.

Catch cans or PCV filters are an oil/air seperator.

In any engine there is an amount of oil mist and engine blowby inside the engine cavity, for emmissions reasons it is no longer acceptable to just vent these vapours to the atmosphere. Vehicle manufactures plumb the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) vent back to the inlet so the vapours can be drawn into the combustion chambers and burnt. The downside is that on the way to the cylinders that oil mist coats the inside of the inlet system and after shut down the vapours can travel back up the inlet tube and coat air flow sensors-one of the key causes of ZD30 engine failure.

By fitting a PCV filter or catch can the oil mist can be seperated from the blowby gases, allowing the blowby to still be drawn back in and burnt and the oil to be caught and later drained off. Fitting a catch can/PCV filter is 100% legal.

Thanks Tony. Is there a detailed process for this operation, as I am sure I don't have one fitted?

Thanks again.

In simple terms all you do is redirect the PCV hose that runs from the rocker cover to the inlet duct so it goes through the filter.

Here is what mine looks like.

I did a bit of research before I fitted mine and the Mann-Hummel Provent 200 seemed to get the most consistant good reviews, so that's what I got. The hardest part of installing it was finding adaptors to match the hose size to the size of the fittings on the unit.
