Long story short my bro is up at diamond bay nsw with the family.
Td42 2002 gu wagon.
Accidentally started it in 3rd.
The linkage locked up and it was stuck on 3rd.
Tried everything and it wouldn't release and the whole box had to come out costing him $$$ miles away from home.
Anyways the mechanic up there said its a very common problem with the gu td42???
Really?
Is it a common problem?

Never heard of it....
Is it auto? What do you mean by started on 3rd took off in third or started the engine with it in gear and no clutch in?

Manual, thought it was in neutral and started the engine. No clutch.
He said he put the clutch in afterwards and couldn't get it out at all.
Drive 40kms in 3rd to mechanic after trying to release it but no joy.
I've never heard of it either.
He's getting bearings all done whilst its out as well but really not what he needs right now.

I have done that sort of thing before, even taken off in third with no issue this does sound odd. It would be nice to know the mechanics reasoning why it does it and why it's "common".

Ok different story...lol
The local mechanic apparently said that but when he took it to the gearbox specialist in the next town he was scratching his head as the callipers were all fine and it freed up straight away.
The specialist really has no answer except for the oil being old or possibly a spot on the bearings and was really struggling for a reason why it locked up.
Anyways he's doing bearings and new clutch whilst its all out.

Unless he is getting it mixed up with the 5th gear issue. If 5 has let go and debris has gone through the box then it may be possible but you would know about it.
