View Full Version : More flex with 2" GU OME lift on GQ or start again?

Hi gents,

Well the time has come...lol

I'm at the point where I am not enjoying my set up one bit and I think I made a mistake.

I have the GU OME 2" lift (almost 3" on the GQ) and at the time of purchase my vehicle was stock as a rock.

I was advised to harden it up a bit because of the future mods that are now there such as bull bar, winch, rear drawers and a few other goodies which I expected would soften it up but no.

My entire set up is too hard and to be honest I don't have a great deal of flex (always lifting wheels), It's hard as a rock and now that I'm doing a lot more rock climbing and wanting to get myself into more difficult tracks It's just not working.

After my set of Federals are finished I am going to get 35" BF's and be done with it which is another issue with my current set up too, however...

Is it worth trying to improve what I have by adding flexi coils, radius arms, etc or start fresh with a complete new set up coils and shocks and????

I don't mind spending some $$$ when the time comes but I am a little disappointed considering the 2" GU OME I have is fairly new, in fact It's probably only done 15k max and already replaced one shock which is brand new as well. I hate wasting money!!!

How much would I get for the OME on Ebay...Peanuts?

Might be a bit hard for answers without seeing the car in person and how limited it is but where I want to be and the tracks I want to do, my current set up is no good...

I want quality and don't mind spending money on the right set up this time or the right mods needed, etc....

If you want more flex and a better ride start again.

how is it becoming dangerous?

Well dangerous is a bold comment...lol...Nah I'm finding the rear wheels lifting a lot, loosing traction on climbing and descending all the time in situations where you want all four wheels on the ground.

Change shocks if you want a better ride,
Taller springs if you need to fit bigger rubber.
Install proper lockers if you want it to feel more secure driving down hill.
Try driving some of the other blokes cars with different shocks and springs.
Not a big fan of flexi coils as they clunk a lot and the small coils can break though I have some in mine.

Don't be disappointed mate, your driving and experience has evolved. You had a good run with them but now potentially driving out of the setup.

You would get a reasonable price for the lift I think? Did OME replace the blown shock under warranty mate? The GU lift is a little heavier on the GQ for sure. Mego might even be interested in your setup mate??

If your happy to spend a little bit more then I can certainly recommend the Superiors Springs and Amada shocks I have now. You might go to a 3" lift too in preparation for your future upgrades. Spring tower bracing while your there.

Do you have a body lift?

Hey mate, yeah it was under warranty and replaced for free by ARB in Kilsyth.

More than happy to spend the coin so I'll check out your suggestion!

No body lift.

You could look hard and maybe find another product, Australian Made for a similar price and build a kit you want. But Superiors are using state of the art 4340 Chromoly everything, you might save some cash going to Roadsafe but there s not that much in terms of the 4340 components there.

The Armadaextremes and the the Cols for the win. Shop around if you like for the rest bit by bit. Or hit them for a bulk order and expect a balance kit tuned to your car. They say on their site that upon purchase they will contact you directly to discuss the right coils for your car.

I am stoked with my setup and rate all their gear very very highly. Feel free to use whatever though. Superiors for me. Superiors for my GQ because I want the best. Superiors for my GUIV because in the Outback there is No Room for Second best.

It's the sh1t!!!!

Chop the guards, you should be able to get away with only trimming the back of the wheel arch

AB

Would probably only rub on the back of each arch. Rear quarter chop and slight bending back of the front arches on the rear and it should be ok.

I'm throwing rosscos 35's on my car which is about 2.5" lift soon and will take photos and report back.

I have worn 35 centipedes and they fit on a 3 inch lift. I have now done a quarter chop and while I was there took about 30 mm of the back of the rear aswell so a brand new 35 centipede will fit under full flex. The front works now on worn ones but I don't think brand new ones will. Having said that I but a worn centipede next to a mates brand new 35 federal couragia and his tyre was only a bee's d#ck bigger. So It might depend on what tyre you run.

What length shock are you going with? Be interested to hear how you go. I have the same 2" GU lift as AB so it's closer to 3" but am keen to get some more flex from it while still remaining in the "legal" zone........and there is no way I could drop $5K on suspension ATM.

Shouldn't have to on the front as the superior arms will place the diff in a better spot. My girlfriend only runs a 2" body lift on her ute with 35's and it out flexs most coil patrols and the Tyres don't touch. The rear on a wagon is a little different, as the wheel is pushed into the guard it is pushed rearward and will mostly touch with 35's so it may need a trim. Also long arms lessen the effect of rear steer when you start to chase better suspension travel. Long arms really are that good (for a bolt on application).

I did do a rough measure but I don't trust the measurements as it was just using the high lift, I'll get some real world measurements before I actually get the shocks but using the highlift I got 504mm compressed 785 at full flex but as this was just lifting the body the other wheel wasn't tucking up so I'm not sure if this will affect it So I'll let you know when I get them!

AB,

I dont have anything too wild on mine, but 3" lift springs, with some good Koni's, Panhards, Drop Boxes, and some good quality Superior adjustable upper and lower arms on the rear, and I'm sure you would be happy....with less cost...

I dont have the adjustable rear arms yet, but mine is pretty good in the GU

I had to beat the back of my front guard in with my 4 inch lift and if I had a 3 inch lift it would hit at the front of the guard on full up travel, and the leafs are going to move on a different axis too.

There is only a couple of degrees difference in the amount of rear steer, between long and short arms

Yeah. There must be slight differences between each vehicle. My old GQ ran 2" suspension and 2" body lift with 35's without an clearance issues, maybe the body lifts is what the difference is in my case.

As for the rear steer, is this at the same travel as the shorter arms? Or just overall?

Yeah I think body lift my have something to do with it.

Well as far as I can see with the same travel. But the angle of the lower link is no where near as steep. The big difference is the anti squat % and location of the instant centre and the performance and handling inprovments over stock that they bring
