Mint looking Gq bud

AB
18th January 2016, 07:20 PM
Seems like the gq oem gauge isn't too bad after all.

Now that I finally have another water temp gauge I gave it the berries coming home from work up radiator hill 4th gear the whole way with lagging on the last leg of the hill @ 37 degrees today.

1/4 on OEM gauge = 75degrees
1/3 = 80-82 degrees
1/2 = 90 degrees
2/3 = 100

I couldn't get it hotter than that.

Interestingly Marks GU sat at half on his OEM gauge and only starting moving the needle over half at 110 and was still only 2/3 on needle when he hit 118 degrees.

So it begins!

Borgwarner 6758 and FATZ airbox upgrade.

Got a flange made up for the intake to airbox rather then the rubber fitting.

Really wanting 4" right into the turbo but the alternator bracket needs a bit of work.

I'm not sure even trimming the bracket will fit, almost need a smaller belt, bring the alternator further in and create more room.

Trying to find good pics on the net of this style airbox and 4" running to turbo but no joy.

It'll be close but I think it'll squeeze in!

Theres enough room. 4" elbow pointing back towards firewall then down to turbo. Plenty around with that box and low mount.

Had a bit of a victory today in prepping everything.

Moved brake canister over a bit, shortened hoses ,raised that little junction box for the canister lines, managed to move airbox another 10mm into the guard which will allow a smoother 4" elbow into the turbo over the alternator.

I can now fit the airbox and battery tray in perfect without cutting up the tray.

Will start stripping the old turbo and lines next weekend and source fittings!

Winnie

That's awesome mate! So you reckon the battery will fit alright? Hope you're taking lots of pics!

That's awesome mate! So you reckon the battery will fit alright? Hope you're taking lots of pics! I've pulled it all back out now to fit turbo but Yep it all fits perfect.

Saved 10mm on airbox, 15mm on canister and another 20mm on cutting the canister lines shorter so the bend is straight away.

Raised the junction box up by 20mm with spacers to avoid front of battery tray.

I was lucky to have a decent hole on the inner guard from the original 4" snorkel elbow so the flange we made up sits actually inside the guard now.

I might even put a slight spacer on the airbox to slightly angle it so the elbow will be further away from the alternator.

Having issues with this last stud on the exhaust manifold to turbo. It's seized good!

It's been stripped in a previous life so the double nut trick is not working.

Next step I guess is to grind two edges. Ran out of time tonight!

Any other ideas?

It's been soaked with wd40 all last week.

Get a little spray bottle and mix 50/50 acetone and atf in it, shake it up good as they will want to separate. Spray the bejesus out of it and let it soak in for a couple of hours. Should help.

Just waiting on one more part and I can bolt everything up!

Made up a new support for the fatz airbox to raise it up another 10mm for better clearance of the 4" pipe to turbo and also to allow the aux battery tray to fit because the oem bottom support angle bracket is in the way of the aux tray.

Been a challenging task but it's all ready to bolt up!

Pirtek are awesome! Managed to keep most the original oil water lines, just made up new fittings to suit Borgwarner.

(I still have not taken the airbox out of my car since I picked it up) It does fit good mate but needs slight mod for aux tray and you would need to take a fair chunk of strength away from the alternator bracket so I decided on raising it a whisker.

It will. It should be better than the ht18 with the standard pump andy has. But once the 12mm goes on it will be incredible. If all other supporting mods are done this turbo can support nearly 200rwkw I took the turbo into Pirtek today and there was an old bloke in there who used to be right into drag cars, street machines, etc.

He saw the turbo and went right through it and was gobsmacked by the quality.

It's killing me being so time poor! I think I'm good to bolt up now. Picked up the fittings for the recirculation and clamps, hoses and oil drain fitting.

I have Lachys birthday party tomorrow and will hopefully wrap this up Sunday time permitting.

The 4" pipe from the airbox is awfully close to the exhaust manifold too and I'll need to grind another 2mm off the alternator bracket. I'm trying to work out how to bring that closer into the side to gain another 5-10mm of pipe clearance.

My issue is having the set 4" snorkel location into the panel so chop chop may be on the cards but will look at it properly over the weekend.

The ht18 was a million times easier but I'm excited to see this running!

Need you to take some more detailed pics of the mounting of your air box. Looks awesome though mate, bet you can't wait to take it for a drive now! Hey mate, I had big issues with mine because of my snorkel location into guard.

I had to raise it a bit using a new bracket underneath and push it towards the firewall using a spacer on the side bracket.

Your snorkel location should hopefully be a straight install using the FATZ OEM brackets mate try that first.

I could've used the OEM set up but I would've ended up with a giant hole on the guard.

Did you have to do any trimming to the alternator bracket or radiator shroud? Is your second battery still in the standard location or did you have to shift it over at all? Yeah I had to trim the alternator bracket. The edge of the alternator bracket is about 10mm thick and about 20mm on top so if you just follow the thickness of the side and cut the top of the bracket at the same thickness it fits perfect. I'll take pics for you.

I had to move the tray 20mm because of my airbox moving so that sucked a bit but only had to nip the edge off the tray because it hits the tower brace panelling but only just.

Nah the chances are it is screwed into a bung designed to be strapped on like you had it, you should be able to unscrew that and have the bare probe with thread ready to be install with any option. Mine was like that at least.

This will be an interesting comparison as Andy should have my previous results of ht18, ic on 4:1 with 33" tyres and now I'm on 4:6 with 35"s and the Borgwarner on same pump.

He should also have my pre IC results too. I'm sure it's on the forum here somewhere but I'm lazy!!!

Then another dyno on the 12mm pump with injectors.

Excitement! ;)

Finally got a new EGT gauge put on today.

Just got back from a short drive from Patrolapart but my temps seem to be a lot cooler with this turbo!

A hell of a lot to be honest!

Awesome. That could be the gauge too mate. Get them to check calibration on your gauge when it's dyno'd.

Note also you had the fuel wound up to suit to HT18 at full Noise, that is nowhere near the base line even of this new turbo so it will be running pretty cool, especially if your running the same boost. Glad it's coming together mate.

Just took Mark for a spin with the passenger window down for the first time.

The sucking sound is ridiculous from the snorkel intake right there. 100% unbearable even for the driver!

I'll have to put a ram head on as well!

Ram head for the win forward facing.
For sure with performance, like Kwinana-WA's wind doctor drag strip :-)
Although I reckon with the smashing downpour we just had here whilst driving home from work was filling up the airbox like being underwater :-(

A ram head will seperate the water and heavier particles. It creates high speed air which travels athrough the small openings at the bottom of the slots.

No ram head will pull more water in than not.

Apologies NNB,
No bad intended, twas just freaking out driving the Mrs wagon home in this weather.
It's an Airtec brand on hers, what's your thoughts on these ones, looks stylish but maybe no good?
Cheers

No they are fine. As above they are designed for this purpose. Have seen on a few occasions people with full 4" intakes and rear facing snorkel with no ram that pull water into the airbox.

Cheers NNB,
You've got me seriously worried now for a theory I had on my ute project, apologies for 'hi-jacking' AB but it's kind of relevant to both our rigs !

Could this roof centre facing 'pipe only' system possibly vortex backwards severe rain:-( ?
Cheers

I prefer the ram head as it reduces the bloody stupid noise and the rain going into my snorkel was a real concern.

Mine is from a truck spare parts place but can be found on ebay.

It is a donaldson ram head.

You heard how much air was being sucked into my snorkel, literally an intense vacuum, even reverse facing or worse your pic above would suck rain water in potentially.

would be good if you could get a good offset ram head over the inner A pillar/windscreen area?

For sure with that ear bending suction:-)
Properly made 'RamHeads' must be key!
Further inspection of the Mrs GU (Airtec) just now found her box is actually still wet :-)

I've driven in these conditions a million times with my set up and never had water inside.
