Hi all, i am looking to get rid of the old TJM steel cable cause i found a couple of kinks in it today..
Its a fer years old and want to know if the synthetic joins to the drum the same way. I haven't had the cable all the way out cause the kink jams it up.
I notice most of the synth cables have a metal square at the end that bolts to the drum??
Probably a very basic question but haven't ever had winch cables out the total length.
any help would be appreciated.

Should attach the same way on 99% of winches.

Be aware that the "attachement" of the end of your cable to the winch be it steel or synthetic is essentially a tensionless anchor and no winching load should be transmitted to the small bolt holding the cable.

That means you should leave a minimun of 6 turns (steel) and 10 turns (synthetic) on the drum IE don't run the winch out to the bitter end.

I try to leave at least the last layer on my winch and use an extension if it gets that low

Thanks for reply.
I understand the winch concept as i was a fitter for franna cranes (little bit bigger winches) and have done my research on how to load on synth cable, i know most just bolt to side of drum but wanted to be sure on tjm winch as previous units were warn before i buy the cable i'm looking at.
cheers

Cool... no offence meant and absolutely none taken

Wasn't trying to teach you how to suck eggs... it's just a habit of mine because others who may not have your know how will "search" out this thread and if all the info is in the one spot the better for those who may not be as experienced

As ET said, they should all attach the same in the drum. Will need to change your rollers to fixed hawse fairlead so you don't pinch the dyneema rope.

You will find it will reduce a few kg's of weight off your front end which will be a bonus :)

You may need to replace the bolt as mine wasn't long enough to go through the lug on the rope

Good point... I have seen an extra thick lug on one of the synthetics. It was humungus
I cut it off and recrimped a thinner lug on there but I have hydraulic crimpers so thats not an option for most people

I've got a 20 ton shop press and even hitting it with that the bolt wouldn't go through with enough thread for me to feel comfortable to use it so I just put a longer one in

Well finally got round to doing it this arvo instead of the usual beer injection...
35 metres of 10mm on a Bloody huge sky crane hook.... Always seem to hit the bigger option button...lol

Oh and dont take any notice of my mates tin snip number plate skills!!! I told him a thousand times, never finish the cut or it will nip out and edge.. (what are mates for hey?)
