Hey guys, just after some help.
I am looking to do a career swap, from logistics to carpentry, so I have been thinking about my car. I can a get builders trailer for cheap and tow that around but I have been thinking about upgrading to a gq ute.
My car is pretty damn tidy, once the hail gets fixed that is. I do really like my car, and don't want to sell, but now would be the best time to sell it, after it gets fixed.
So my main question is, will a tidy gu 4.5 fetch a decent enough price to be able to get a gq ute?? Or best keep my car and tow a trailer.
Or even open to other ideas. Just trying to guage some info from people who are in the trade.
Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Will your Ute be able to do what you wagon can now??
Camping, touring.. Whatever you do in it now will a Ute cover your needs??
If no, then keep your bus and grab a trailer.
If you have a roof rack then a small extension On the bull bar and you'll be carting longer lengths.
A Ute would need the same setup..
Do you need a trailer?
Can you build a second set of draws for your job??
What sorta area of carpentry are you looking at??

Your wagon and all the new excessories, running costs, maintenance, breakages, upgrades, winch, tyres, lights, roof rack, radio, GPS, laptop, AirLockers, EVERYTHING becomes a Tax deduction if you tow the trailer!
MR tax man I need the 4wd as a tow vehicle because I am on site and it can get very boggy on some sites sir.
Having to Unload the ute to go OFFROAD will become a chore.

Sell it and buy Timbo's TD42 wagon to tow your trailer!! Hell yeah!!
P.s. I would call an Airlocker install a blown diff and therefore maintenance ;) but that's just me ;)

Majority of the time its only me in the car, other times just me and the misso. Ute would still be suitable.
I want to get into residential carpentry. I would need a trailer to cart my sh!t around. I have thought draws as well as trailer, car/work stuff in the car and the rest in the trailer.

I like the disclaimer :p Do many tradies actually use utes as utes anymore?? I see most with a couple tool boxes and a trailer.
i got 3 main reasons for thinking about swapping,
1. Running costs, being an auto and petrol, fuel usage would be quite high. Pushing 30L/100 usually. (i want a td42t)
2. Inconvenience of the size of it. Wagon plus trailer is F ing long. Plus limited carrying ability.
3. Im in a position at the moment where i have a bit of extra cash, trying to get organized before i take a huge pay cut.

39598Tow a properly set up Tradies trailer would be APITB unloading all your gear to go away for the weekend.
As much as I love utes towing a trailer has many benefits. As long as you have a safe place to park it,
security would be my only concern. I'm just about to build a trailer for a tradie from a service body , hint hint

That's a top idea mate. Stick a chassis on one of those tubs and your set..

When its not in use i can throw it in the back yard no issues. Away from prying eyes.
Hint hint ay, if you didnt live some 2000km away i might consider it, but i can get one from about 2km away.
I think i might just stick with the gu. Make some draws up and get a roof rack. oh and a steel bar, annnnddd claim in on tax.

A tradies trailer with a compressor on the front , would be ideal. unhitch and away you go,
working out of your "U" may see it getting knocked around a bit, I hear you say no it wont happen,
But a nick here and a nick there all add up. Plus working out of your "U" will save on set up costs

The U is only in good nick cause it got hailed on and the insurance company is fixing that up. It's worth more to me then anyone else so if it gets a bit rough it's no issue. Plus it's 15 years old so a few battle scars are ok.

You don't want to be hauling around a trailer on a work site, been there done that and what a pain in the arse it is, ute is a much better option.

Is there room in the budget for a early Ford or Holden tray back work Ute??
Pick up an AU for sub 3k these days.
Get some tool boxes. Done.
Also air is not really required as most tools these days are gas powered..

I am a residential roof chippy and you can get around easier with a trailer IMO as everything is in there if you need to head off to the shops or bank unhitch and makes parking a breeze. A well setup trailer is priceless. Driving a ute can be a pain especially on long runs. I had one for 10 years and sold it for the wagon best investment yet. Unless you have a canopy everything gets wet and messy if you play in the mud. Nothing worse than climbing into a muddy wet swag
