wont shft into 4x4, you can move the gear stick and it disengages drive but wont shift into 4 low or high and the green 4x4 light on the dash doesnt light up. help appreciated

Jump under the bus and check the lever pin is still attached to the arm On the transfer box.
The gear stick has its own gate which forces to downward movement so it will feel normal even if the connection is broken.

My troopy was like that and ended up being a bracket underneath not allowing it to engage.
and when it was in gear popped out now and then ,not good in steep counrty

yeah thats a bit dangerous. it never popped out when it was working.

Whats the oil in the transfer case like? Might need a changing...
