View Full Version : Old vs New turbos and custom exhaust manifold comparisons?

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there have been many comparisons between old and new turbo swaps and different exhaust manifolds on TD42. I’m more familiar with the petrol tuning scene where it’s common to see different manifolds or turbo’s swapped without changing other variables to see what gains might be had.
Ive noticed a number of different turbos being used and a few custom exhaust manifolds but the accompanying reviews were usually at a higher PSI. Turbo’s may look the same but a hell of a lot has changed, just as the increases that can be gained from a tuned length tube manifold etc.

Has anyone got any personal results or read of any that they care to share?

Hi mate,

Our member RLI is in the middle of playing with a few turbo sit-ups on his TD42Ti. He has had the standard, UFI, Kinguawa and is soon to be fitting a garret.

Search for his thread "200kw club" I think it's called. He is having an operation today and is promising to start his big comparo write up while he recoups in hospital. Keep an eye out for his new thread in the coming days.

Tuned length/ extractor style manifolds have no benefit for a td42, if anything they lose power where we want it. Diesels dont have the heat like a petrol does so you need to shortest possible route to the turbo to allow for best spool and flow for the turbine.

i have been wondering the same for a while, i have built dozens of manifolds for petrol engines and wondered if any of the principles followed on to deisels
