View Full Version : Dual battery set up

hello everybody,
I've just joined today to set my Patrol up right and get out and use it. I would like some advise about the dual battery set up please. Are there any limitations on a second battery selection with the 4.2 TD 2002 model with the location of the battery tray being right next to the turbo on the passenger side . A battery company has advised me that one particular 100amp agm brand can not be fitted as the heat from the turbo will affect the battery. I'm lost for ideas for the right choice and set up. Can anybody help.

Hi Francis, welcome to the forum. Suggest to start with you search the topic you are after. There is heaps of info on that particular topic and you can spend a bit of time working out exactly what is best for you.

Get into the Electrics sub-category and have a trawl as well.

Welcome to the forum. Batteries are one of those things which bring out differing views, often with those views reflecting the choices made by the commenter. I have a multi battery system but only the crank battery is under the bonnet so have no axe to grind either way in regard to type for that location.
No battery likes heat, but sometimes it cannot be avoided. Heat does not stop a battery from doing it’s job, but it will reduce the battery’s lifespan. Some say that wet batteries are more tolerant of heat than AGM’s, even some experts, but I think this remains open to debate. Wet batteries IF properly maintained may last longer under the bonnet, but very few are actually properly maintained! A deep cycle battery needs to be fully charged at which point it gases & loses electrolyte & thus needs regualr topping up. A very hot environment exacerbates this. For many folk who tend to not check & maintain their batteries as often as is required (most people) an AGM will outlast the wet battery as it does not lose electrolyte & thus does not need (nor can be) topping up, they are maintenance free. The battery company who advised you may not have taken this into consideration - not uncommon.
