If you have just bought it, have you done a service yet, oils, filters, leads, plugs, coolant

I've put in a litre of heavy duty oil stabilizer in but that's all so far

Why does it need oil stabilizer.

Adjust the tappets and put on a new oil filter with so fresh oil

Cause its an old engine and I didn't have enough cash left for 4 litres of the good stuff apparently that cleans up old oil

Tappets are really not that difficult, it's a little time consuming but it's mechanically quite simple. There's a good writeup somewhere on here, searching for tappets should yield a good result.

Incidentally remember to go a slightly larger clearance if you're running LPG.

cant see why 2 mechanics wouldn't want to adjust your tappets.
its only bring things back to the way it should be.
Bit hard when funds are limited but good luck

I dont know why either one of them told me it was a headache but from what I hear its easy must not be good mechanics I guess

could also be an exhaust leak, i had that sound on my old commonhore calais and it turned out to be #5 cylinder exhaust gasket was buggered and sounded like a wee man tapping furiously trying to break out of the engine bay

I only hear it when accelerating

same as an exhaust leak,, sometimes you can feel a leak
if you can get your hand close enough with out burning yourself

Think u may be right could that be causing it to backfire on gas aswell cause its backfiring heaps now
