Most probable the locking Hub but that's a guess.

Is it grinding noise only or bit of squealing or crunching.
Is it periodic or constant.
Does it happen at certain times, like turning or going over bumps.

No its really random took for another drive and kept my hand on the transfer stick could really feel it coming thru slowed down selected 4wd then back to 2wd and it got worse.Im going to take the front drive shaft out and go for another drive, everyone I talk to say patrol transfer boxes are bullet proof maybe they arent?

My ac compressor bearing failed and made an awful grinding noise in and off until it would stay on all the time

CDC,

You won't harm your car driving with one or two of the hubs locked in on the bitumen, as long as you don't have the small lever inside in the 4wd position.

Is the noise more of a clicking/clacking sound rather than grinding .... then this will be one of the AUTO hubs binding a little.

Grinding noises can come from disc brakes, stones lodged between the disc backing plate and the disc itself, and bearings.

Try driving with both the hubs locked and the car in 2wd, and this will take the hubs out of the equation....

I had a strange noise come and go in the drive train. It turned out to be the hand brake was not fully releasing sometimes.
