In my DX ute the stock Nissan speakers are mounted in a ‘box section’, moulded plastic which is the front section of the door pockets. Not sure if other models are the same.
I am getting a new radio fitted & if possible would like to fit some better speakers, but it seems that in the DX cab I am pretty much limited to the original speaker locations.

Can anyone tell me if there are aftermarket speakers which will be better & fit in the location of the old ones. I’d prefer ‘3 ways’ if possible. Any recommendations?

Thanks

If they are the same as the wagons then 6" will drop straight in. I have vision 3 ways 300w in the rear and sony 360w 4 ways in the front

Would be a better sound if you put some splits in.

By ‘splits’ do you mean separate ‘tweeters’ & ‘woofers’? If so I realise this may sound better, but there really is little available space in a DX ute cab, & I would wonder if, in such a confined area if the extra expense & fitting complexity would actually make a heck of a lot of difference? I certainly don’t have space for one of those base units like folk fit into their boots.

TD, can you post a pic of your door, so I can check out if the fitting would be the same as on mine. If 6.5’s will fit, it would give a much greater range of possibilities than just 6.0’s

Yea that's them. The actual speaker takes up no extra room, it's just a little tweeter that you need a position for. They are smaller then a golf ball. In my first car they were screwed to the plastic cover on the door that hides the screws for the wing mirrors. I'll see if my brother is home (he drives my first car now) and see if I can get a pic of the tweeters for you.

Because of you space constraints, I would put a higher emphasis on splits, they will sound better, and then you don't need to run a separate sub. Btw I'm just assuming you aren't looking for ear shattering acoustics.

Cuppa I think you'd be glad with any replacement after market speakers off a new head unit. But splits are always the best option.

These little buggers made a good difference to the sound from my stereo. Simple enough to install.

Just out of interest do you have speakers in the Pod or a separate head unit.

Sub - oh yeah that’s what they’re called. ;) Yeah not my thing, don’t need to feel all that pounding bass, never did get into the techno thing, closest I ever got was the Chemical Brothers. I mainly listen to talk radio, but have a pretty eclectic taste in music ranging from Robert Johnson to Hawkwind to The Who & Joan Baez to Angelique Kidjo to Laurie Anderson. Folk, Blues, Rock, Reggae & ‘World Music’. A good clean sound without distortion is what I’m after. Have already stuffed my hearing from years of wind noise on motorcycles, don’t need huge volume to do more damage, but would like to be able to crank up the volume now & again when camped. (No TD, no head unit or speakers in the pod, just in the cab).

With splits are the units usually separate tweeter plus two way units, or tweeter plus single unit?

Tweeter plus a one way woofer. Don't get sucked into the 3 way, 4 way crap, it's all sales hype. A pair of splits will sound a hell of a lot better than a pair of 4 ways.

As Winnie said, go the splits. 4 way etc is asking the speaker to do to much at once, it has to be able to handle the lower, middle and high end of the sounds. Where as the splits handle the low and middle stuff in the woofer and the high stuff in the tweeter. Giving you a better controlled sound across the audio spectrum.

Think of splits as 2 separate speakers. Eg, being a ute, you have 2 speakers (left/right) you then replace your factory 2 with splits, that now makes it 4 speakers.

OK, have been looking on ebay. Appears you can get splits with or without crossover units, & two different sorts of crossover units - passive & powered. Passive would be easier to install.

Questions.
1.Do the splits with crossovers sound better than those without at around the $100 mark?
2. If getting splits without a crossover how are they wired? (I can see how those with a passive crossover are wired).

Would these be any good

@ Cuppa have a word with 4OFF he used to do Comps and will set you on the right path, sound proofing the cabin would be a great start IMO

Splits will sound better with cross overs, cross overs control the frequency of the sound going to each speaker, in other words with out a cross over the full range of sound, the highs and lows will go to both speakers,
with cross overs the sound is controlled so that the highs go to the tweeters and the lows go to the woofers, no use sending sound to a speaker if it is out of its range to reproduce clearly.

For your application, passive with cross overs will be best. Have at look at ryda.com.au they have a heap of car audio and prices. IMO I'm not a fan of sony speaker, they are ok but cheap and underpowered

I went with JL speakers as recommended to me.. could not be happier. Splits where just under 300 for the pair from memory but well worth it.
I have the 4 door so did the rears and a 4 channel JL amp as well and it shows the ole you get what you pay for..
