Spent the arvo muckin arround seeing if the split rims off my cruiser would fit the GU ute I recently brought. The missus came out and asked me what I was doin immediate response was what does it look like wherin I got an immediate clip across the ears for bein a wise arse. She then went off to doin some shopping or whatever and I got back to the job at hand.

After bustin my nuts I thought I wondered what the weight difference between the split rim and 750/16 tyre and the 8x16inch rim with 305/70/16 tyre would be. After scratchin my head and with my head still ringin from the battering the missus gave me I had a brain wave an went and got the missus weight scales. The ones with the nice pink fluffy material covering where you stand. Ah ha this would be the go an so I weighed both with the split rim and tyre comming in at 36 Kg's and the 8x16 comming in at 46 kg.

I was a bit surprised at the difference in weight so now I am chasin some split rims for the Patrol to use when towing the van. Oh and the missus scales have some nice black marks on the pink fluffy material. That'll teach the missus a lesson :harhar:

You won`t win the argument when she finds the black marks on her scales mate. Your ears will be ringing again.

Yeah I know like the time she caught me using her good saucepan heating up some water to check a thermostate opening. Gee no sense of humour.

I painted some calipers years ago, the weather was shit and wet and the paint would not cure, so I decided to bake them in Mrs Fracs oven.............not a good idea, I found to my pain.

Hay mate. Split rims are heavier, Its probably the Tyre which is giving you your weight difference.
Also different tyres use different construction so it's quite possible that you have more weight difference between the tyres than what's showing, your rims are just off setting it.

People remove split rims more for ease of changing a Tyre. Splits can be dangerous if not treated with respect.

Skinny split rims on a Patrol IMO would reduce the track and border on dangerous.
A nice fat tyre even a 31r would have the patrol more stable. Now with repair kits for tubeless tyre cheap,
quick and easy, why would you risk injury with a split rim.

Having swapped 5.5 split rims with 235/16’s fitted for 265’s 16x8 ROH’s, I know that the split rim & skinny tyres weighed more, (as well as requiring significantly more air pressure to carry loads).

I would be wondering if you’ve swapped tyres with ‘standard’ construction for LT construction, as well as the rims?

Yeah mate agree went an snuck the scales again and weighed a 100 series cruiser split with no tyre an came in at a shade under 16kg then weighed an 8x15 sunny rim which tipped the scales at 9kg.
The tyres on the patrol are the new Kumo Road Venture MT's they come with a 10 ply rating and obviously are heavy.

Splits can be dangerous if you don't take care. Remembered when I bought an R&R beadbreaker years ago an practised using it on a pile of tyres with rims I had lying arround at the time until I got the hang of it. Some of the tyres were on the rims for years an were a shit to remove from the rim. However when I cleaned the rim and ring of the accumulated rust and whatever they did become easier to remove an install. I remember I had about 6 split rims with tyres and an equal number of sunnies with tyres and I practiced on the lot must have changed em at least twice over a period of time. Gee talk about a glutton for punishment.

I currently have a set of near new 750/16 LT Dunlop Road Grippers lying arround with good quality tubes. What was good enough for Mr Nissan would surely be good enough for me and am proficient enough to deal with split rims. Figured I could pick up a set of splits pretty cheap as they are not the flavour of the month with many people.
