I am just replacing the swivel bearings on the front axle of the GU and when I took of the top and bottom rectangular blocks that hold the bearings, each one had a shim on.
Do i just leave this shim on with new bearings?
or is there some way/ procedure to check if they are needed with the new bearings?
Thanks

Put the shims back in the same place you removed them from. Some guys remove them completely to rid the Patrol of the front wheel wobble.

you use a small scale to pull on the swivel hub arm, this is how you work out if shims are required or need removing, its in the manual & has a diagram to show how it is done, most use their hand to test the tension & I am super guilty of this as I don't have the scale 'thingy' required, for general reference, you remove shims to tighten the tension so fitted new kingpin bearings in & leaving the same shims in place can sometimes make them too loose, don't use boat grease as some recommend & a slight smear of silicone to stop seepage, slight smear of silicone on the hubs when refitting them to for the same reason, silly mistake by some, a couple of water crossings & u will be thankful, saves premature failure, I kit mine appx once a year or so as I flog them severely in mud, water & good rock & hill climbs, this is usually because I snap an axle, throw a hub or bearing, bend a link, do a seal or 2 but I always do the lot properly regardless of what has failed as I run 33's & neg 13 rims so there is a bit more stress on bearings anyway
