Hi Guys

I'm looking at probably upgrading my intercooler to the welded ones. I've seen now a couple of sellers advertising these intercoolers. And they don't need Exchange units either. They are all over ebay under $400 .

Some talk about having 20 tubes instead of 12 making it better ? thicker core ?
Anyone purchased any of these. which ones are recommended ? are they good ?

thanks heaps

They have come down in price and rightly so for them to be charging $600 PLUS FOR A $50 CORE is ridiculas
Check if they are pressure tested , the higher the better and what kind of warranty they offer.
I paid these prices for a change over but I was happy with that. None of these were available 6 months ago
Its a must do and you will notice the difference

All those IC's you linked are the same IC, just from a different reseller. I got one from Autocooling for $380. No improvement in power, EGT's dropped but only ever so slightly, maybe 10-30c, but my EGT's were low to start with. Would I have bought one if I knew the little difference I would have in EGT's? Nup. But I sure as hell wasn't going to hand over my hard earned on a CC or HPD cooler, thats for sure. Unless I could try one first, then I would. :)
Being all the same, go for the one that gives you the new o'ring I reckon. I just used my old one and sealed it up with a smear of silicone.
One thing I did find though. The hole where the MAP sensor screws into, the taper they put on it wasn't big enough so the sensor didn't pull down properly. I just drilled it out a little more and then more silicone there too, just to make sure it won't leak.

Anyway one less thing to worry about, they should have been tigged from the factory.
Keep an eye on your gauges as you'll need to adjust your boost again.
@ Mudski you mean the boost sensor

Just ordered one of these to replace my oily leaking original 03 troll.

I'd rather ease off the go pedal to reduce egt's than try to get more blood out of the zd stone with the you beaut big $$$$ coolers

Cheers

I replaced mine with a fully tig replacement as it was leaking in 2-3 different areas, I paid $400 exchange for it & it was in Canberra, one leak was above the buzzbar & caused it to corrode for reasons unknown, I threw in a new buzzbar & glowplugs whilst I was there, all good

Yeah let us no how they go, my IC is stuffed too, I've been doing some homework and apparently there are some Chinese ones on the market that are poor quality. Something about poor quality castings.

My intercooler needs replacing on my patrol as well.. Has anyone tried one of these ones from ebay? Look like a $1200 ASE Job for half the price.. Comes with thermo fan, new piping and everything

not sure why you you want to pay the extra for piping as OE is fine, decent after market tigged are around $400 or less now with no change over.
Mine is Diesel Smart and can't be happier,
To all who read this if your IC is oily and dirty chances are its no good and leaking.

Nah not really for the piping haha.. Cause its the size of a Cross country intercooler with the under mounted thermo fan.. My intercooler is well and truly stuffed so weighing up between a tigged replacement and the bigger upgrades.. Also will be matching either with a bigger bonnet scoop.. For the price didnt look too bad ha

You really think that CC IC is worth $1300 plus dollars , Mudski and I have been all over this and finally prices are coming down.
even $400 for a $50 core there is not $350 worth of welding, The more you stray from OE the more can go wrong and it will when
you least expect it. Bigger scoop and tigged ic will see your EGTs low enough

For 1300 I couldn't see it being worthwhile no, better things too spend money on I reckon ha..

I like the idea of a thermo fan on the IC. The only thing I don't like is that it's made in china

I ended up buyin a second hand tig welded intercooler . already my EGT runs about 50degrees lower . im happy with that . I guess the ones on ebay would be the same or better

Thermo's on or under the IC is a waster of time for the amount you will gain, pretty much nothing. I have read so many people who have done this mod have just gone and removed it as it didn't achieve anything. The better option, albeit, bloody expensive, it to get the scoop like TD has. I have one also and that will do far more than any fan will.

There is a lot of miss information about fans on intercoolers,
I was looking through some of my older 4wd action mags and came across issue 197, there is a patrol crd with a fan on top of the intercooler,
The owner saying it has made a massive difference to egt and a slight increase in power and torque wtf.

From the tests I've done with cotton and blue tack , I found the OE IC
gets very little air flow as the bulbar drags the air down near driving lights.
Maybe 75% gets through but only when speeds get up to 85KPH and over
the larger scoops allows the IC to work at speeds down to 60KPH.
Jury is out on the fan, Ok if doing heaps of sand work

paulyg

I think putting a fan on top of the intercooler is just going to create a restriction to air flow, more so at higher speed.
An 8 inch fan is not going to push as much air as what would go through the scoop at 60 or even 40 kmh.

threedogs
27th January 2014, 12:31 PM
I don't think an OE scoop will be working at 60 let alone 40 try the cotton test.
Plus how many times have you seen a bug go into the scoop 99% of the time it misses
You would put the fan under so you don't restrict air flow from the top

is upgrading the intercooler worth it?
