Gooday all . I have been unable to find out if this has been coverered before . How can i increase the torque of an automatic 3ltr to the torque output of a manual 3 ltr CRD. Also is there any benefit of doing this . Regards Mick

You need to fit a Torque Converter Lock Up switch to 'manually' lock the converter... and... Yes, there is a benefit but be careful how you use it

I have a manual torque converter lock up switch on mine. Among other things I use it from stopping the auto from getting too hot climbing up long hills, its great for that.

I would love to do this mod mainly for better fuel consumption ,,,,,,, BUT the guy who services my auto
advised me against it for a daily driver, Saying it was all the rage back in the 80s. But I'm happy to listen to everyone who has it done.
I was going full manual lock up with a momentary switch for when you stop.

Just interested Threedogs, did they give a reason for advising against it?

Probably cause it would wear out quicker I'm not 100%.
I'm thinking instead of tricking it to change gears and harder ,
some internal work would need to be up graded, Check out Wholesale Automatics.
its not just a loom I think its only a bandaid solution, but could be wrong normally are lol

The TC lock up switch will actually extend the tranny life as it will help keep the temps down (a helluva lot in some cases)... BUT... it can also cause damage or excessive wear if you do not use it wisely so your Auto Mech isn't wrong in what he is saying as such.
There are no internal mods required.
Mine cost me approx $30 to DIY on my TB42. It depends how complex you want to make the switching. Mine had a switch and LED to arm it and a Narva old school foot operated dip switch mounted on teh side of the drivers foot rest to select "Locked" or "normal"
I used it extensively off road and towing. It transformed the car and I did over 100,000 K's in it. I sold the car a few years ago now but still see it regularly and it is still going gangbusters
I agree with 3D about tricking up the chaneg as well and I was about to fit the Wholesale Autos upgraded valve body (still with a TC lock up) when I sold teh truck

From what I have heard no internal modifications needed, The GU transmission in the only one strong enough to use it in 1st and reverse, otherwise you can just not use it in those gears. A couple of months ago not long after I bought the new truck I drove up the winding road leading to one of the ski resorts ( not sure which one but Hotham maybe) and my transmission temp got to 140. (outside air temp was about 4 degrees) and I was kicking myself for buying an auto. The next day I decided to experiment with the TC lockup, the transmission between 50 and 75 degrees, it was awesome. Not sure if I would own an auto without one now.

ET, what is the purpose behind the upgraded valve body? I have a mate of mine who is considering this option.

From What Ive heard Drewboyaus, Most valve bodies are not strong enough to handle lockup in 1st and reverse but im sure there are a lot of other reasons, im sure there are experts on here that will know the full story though.

To all who intend doing this mod, how long are you expecting to keep your Patrol.
I don't see myself buying another 4x4, that's why I'm backing off on this mod

The upgraded bodies hold higher pressures and provide sharper shifts etc... the guys at Wholesale Auto's are the ones I trust implicitly for anything to do with Patrol's and know a whole hell of a lot more than me. I do regeret not getting one before I sold my 'Q tho. I would have been really keen to experience the difference

Hiys 3D,
The longer you want to keep the 'Trol the more reason to fit one I reckon. The drop in transmission temps is HUGE and I think everyone agrees that tranny temp is extremely important in the auto's.
Some people ask why the manuf doesn't fit them new. Well in short they do, it is just that they design a vehicle for all people incl the Soccer Mums so they limit the TC lockup to cruise conditions to reduce temps and wear and improve fuel economy.
Bottom line however is as always... only do the mods you are comfy with... thats why I haven't done a Dawes on my CRD 'Trol, I am comfy without it. If you aren't happy then don't do it.
