Hi everyone, I have a 92 ford maverick 4.2 petrol carby. I was wondering how much work this there to get to the timing belt to change it and how often does it need changing. I have had this vehicle for over two years now and its done about 285k and I dont think it has been changed or anything. Thanks for your help guys

Diesel doesn't have belt/chain so I wouldn't think the petty does either

Is it a chain or belt on the 4.2?

Hi growler2058 how do you adjust that.

I have run out of ideas what could be causing the car to back fire thought the carby and though the exhaust. I have tried changing the piontsand adjusting the timing and it still does it.

My manual lists these items for a backfiring carby engine. Faulty Exhaust Gas Recycling valve (EGR), vacuum leak, valve clearances, carby fuel float level, stuck valve, or faulty valve spring and Thermostatic air system faulty and of course engine timing.

Hi mudnut I will check all those areas out.

The other thing is that its an intermitten problem

Intermittent problem could possibly be a loose connection in the ignition system. (Decades ago, my idiot mate used to flick the key off and on, which would cause a back fire.)

Could also be the same problem I had today. The bottom internal mounting screws on the carby have come loose.

Grab the top of the air cleaner and try moving it any movement.

watch the carby as you move the air cleaner is the top part moving. if so remove the air cleaner assembly, undo the 4 carby retaining nuts, lift the carby of the manifold and flip the carby. You will see 3 screws (the middle has a hole though it) do the screws up tight and re assemble.

Another possibility is a leaking inlet - gasket blown.
