Just joined the site to have access to some excellent information.
Use to own a GQ ST3.0 petrol and now currently have a GU 2002 TD 3.0 ST and a GU 2008 TD 3.0 TI.
GU's was big advancement on the GQ ST3.0 (maybe because the 3.0L six was a bit underpowered). From my personel experience with the two GU patrols, the early model GU 2002 drives a lot better than the 2008 common rail model. The 2002 model has better fuel consumption generally 2 to 3 L/100 km better. On the plus side, the 2008 model is not susceptable to the "grenade" issue.
Some existing issues with both patrols, I cannot get the tyres perfectly balanced..IE like when I drove the cars out of the showroom, the original set of tyres ran perfectly (bridgestone Dessert Duelers 693). Subsequent sets of tyres (Bridgestone Dessert Duelers 694) cannot be balanced the same as the original tyres. Was advised that the 693 were not available in Australia and 694 were the equivalent.--Experienced some really shonky workshops who charge good money for performance balancing when the floor operators did not know the difference between performance and standard balancing. The operators mounted the wheel and tyre assembly onto the balancing machine incorrectly with the wheel and rim wobbly and attempt to balance a wobbly rim. :useless:--oops used the wrong emoticon
The 2008 TI stereo and navigation system is pretty average and now looking to replace with a double din Android aftermarket unit.
Overall, I believe that patrols are really good value and have enjoyed ownership of them.:smiley_thumbs_up:
