Righto lads and ladettes,
Its time for the skeleton from the closet
What was your first car ???
Dign deep for this one,
Mini panelvan big block 850cc (about 15-16 years young)
Had week or two (unloaded before the lads found out)
Traded it for a MK1 Cortina
First regoed car
LJ Torana
186/5 speed celica box

1962 Morris 850
850cc 4 spd manual devoping 34 bhp @ 8500 rpm
Top speed 75 mph and Fuel consumption was 50 miles per gallon
Ruby Red Looked fast even at 10 mph
I drove this little beast for 60,000 miles . It rather spectacularly expired at 75 mph dropping a valve through the Piston and then breaking the Crankshaft.
Towed it to a Garage in Kyneton and traded it in for a Ford Cortina.

Mine was a 1983 Austin Metro (UK car) 1300cc 65bhp auto. It was only 9 years old, but as with most Austin cars of the era in the UK (salt!) it was rusted though in many places. Did many bodges on it (I was only 17), in the end the engine was only running on 3 cylinders (out of 4). Still, I sold it for about $600.
As I've got older and my income has increased, I'd like to think I've moved forward, but something has gone wrong because my cars have got older too, culminating in an 19 year old Patrol today. hmmm, how did that happen LOL!!
Oh yeah, I was single back then with no kids!!

The old HJ Kingswood Sedan. Blue with beige vinyl roof. Had custom tailshaft vibration from 60km/h and speakers that could be put on the roof for the tunes while standing on the bonnet to watch the street drags behind Powers Brewery, Yatala. Woohoo they were the days.

1977 HX Kingswood with a worked 253 small block V8 hooked up to the turbo 400 3 spd gearbox and everything else was stock. That thing chewed fuel like it had a garden hose for a fuel line but man it was a lot of fun. Traded it in for $8,000.00 in 1988 for a Ford Telstar.... What a mistake that was...!!!

I would dearly like to say mine was a 1981 Rover SD1 3.5V8 but unfortunately was the old mans but as he was out of the county most of the year, I used it alot........ bloody great fun.
Unfortunately my actual 1st car was a poo brown 1984 1ltr Austin Metro (UK) and the biggest bag of crap that money could buy, had it for 3 years and failed its MOT with out fail every year due to rust in all the wrong places (which got welded up to pass the MOT's) and broke down constantly...... always had to make sure I parked the car at the top of a hill as the only way to start it was to bump start it. It then became my younger bros first car, I sold it to him for 150 quid............. bargain at half the price hahahahahahahaha

My first was a "BMW 520 E12" in yellow, 1979 was its first reg. Most mates had mk2 ford fiestas or mk3 ford escorts, so was way cool. Cruising Southend-on-sea seafront at the weekend was fun then, when I was 17.
However was stolen on new-years eve! By then 6 months later had been in 7 accidents, broke exhaust manifold clean off, bent every panel badly, most lights cracked, rust every where, bumpers gone and one window put through by a granite kerb stone, the grand canyon running down the sump and the gear box 2” higher than the factory put it.
Never seen a yellow one again.:jawdrop:

lol, my Metro was exactly the same. Rusty sills, front and rear cross members. Spent my whole time trying to disguise the fact that that they were full of filler to get it through the MOTs! Worse still, I later got a Montego rust bucket. Tried welding that, but the metal was so thin it was impossible. Love the Rover V8s though, had one in my 1973 Rover P6, can't beat the sound! The SD1 was my dream car for a long time!

1983 ZK Fairlane, white, 6cyl, 76,000km 1 owner back in 2003. Paid $1000 registered for a very tidy unit but being an unappreciative kid I didn't look after it as well as I should. Dropped in a 302 in 2004, which was fun while it lasted and kept it up until last year when I ripped out the good gear and sold the remains to the wreckers for $100. I now drive a tidy, 1 previous owner XE Falcon that the Fairlane's parts have found their way into, so in a way the old girl lives on lol...

1972 VH Chrysler Valiant. Got her for $350 in the early 80's. She was missing her windscreen wiper motor ( which I didn't notice until I was on the freeway and it poured down raining). Had velvet velour thumb tacked on all internal panels. Girlfriends door couldn't open from the inside. I had to car dozens of water bottles to feed the radiator. I was 17 living away from home and absolutely broke, so could never fix her up, but she went on and on and on. I still have fond memories of that car.

EK Holden Sedan... wasn't a thing on it you couldn't fix with either a 1/2 by 9/16th Spanner, Screwdriver, Garden Hose, Vice Grips or 2 feet of Fencing wire.
Blew a head gasket out shooting... drove it back to Wagga with the cap off the radiator and a garden hose into the cabin. We drove along and kept topping up the water from a supply of Coke Bottles (real ones scabbed on the side of teh road) via the hose and topped up ourselves from the slab in case we ran outa water and had to use.. well.. you can imagine it can't ya
Snapped off the gear lever... (Racing changes in a column shift aren't pretty when your pissed)... Vice Grips
Crappy fuel (I was an apprentice so clean fuel from a bowser was a luxury)... strip clean and reassemble the Carby (about 15 minutes)
Gears? Optional, only ever had all 3 until the Sat Night Drags Racing Change incident (stupid Hillmans) after that it was a lottery but could usually find 2

1964 Mk1 Cortina, paid 90 bucks for it, it was painted Mission Brown house paint with the proverbial 6" brush. I called it Shake Rattle and Roll... coz thats what it did down the road. Had it for 3 months the front left wheel fell off (loose wheel nuts... who woulda thort...) so I traded it on a 10yr old HG Kingswood, that was a very tidy 1 owner car... was! 14 mths later it was a wreck, every 4 wks (and almost to the day) something would happen to it... ahhhh them were the days LOL.

My first was a 1922 Chev 4 I was looking at it in a driveway on my way home from school and the owner came out and said if I took it away I could have it, so I grabbed a few mates and we pushed it 3 miles to a mates uncles place, he was away for a while and the mate was looking after the garden. After nearly breaking my arm trying to crank start it (someone had swaped the plug leads, we ripped off the guards, doors and bonnet and painted it up with old house paint and brush, the wheels were multi colour witheach wooden spoke painted a different colour. We used th fire it up and take it for quick spins areound the side streets after school (I was the eldest at 14) The law finally caught up with us when one of the guys waged school for the day and was driving all over the place and got caught, the car was conficated and sent to the tip. My first registered and licenced car was a 1939 Willys overland I bought for 39 pound 10 shillings in 1961 and wrote off about 6 months later I replaced that with a 1950 Peugeot 203 which I did a lot of work on and it would beat most of the Holdens and Ford Zephers that were around then.

1952 Humber Super Snipe. 6 Cylinder 4 litre side valve. Black of course, with a glass partition between the seats and drop down dickie seats in the back facing backwards.
Battery had one cell stuffed, so used to start it with a crank handle. The thing was built to be quiet and even had a muffler between air cleaner and carbeuretter, so after starting it one day and thinking it wasn't running, I put the handle back in and woke up about 20 feet away.
Took about 300 yds to stop it at 60km/h as it also needed brakes, tyres etc.
Looked a treat with surf-racks on the top, 6 or 7 boards on the racks and 6 or 7 of us inside drinking on the way to Aldinga Beach. Loved that car, but after I hit the parent's 2 week old garage, I had to get rid of it.
You should see what those spring steel bumpers do to tin garages even at parking speed.

i always been a 4B man, my first car was a 1997 Holden Frontera, i lifted it, put 31's on it and some other slight mods. had to replace the rear wheel bearings once, it worked out cheaper to replace the whole rear diff assy as the individual bearings were about $700ea. i killed it in 2008 when i tried to drive through lake jindabyne... what was i thinking lol

(non-painted front bar was from when I hit a wallaby)
It was kinda reliable, only let me down a couple of times and was stuff that you'd expect to go wrong of a car that age. The engine was worked up a fair bit, it went hard as nuts. I really liked that car, but it was just far too expensive to run, it cost $90 to fill up and would get 400kms out of a tank. The Patrol is cheaper to run than that!

After that post it got me thinking how many cars have I had... so after writting them down and adding it up, if i haven't forgotten any, i've had 23 cars in 30yrs... still got 2 of them :)
I have no idea on how many cars I have been through but I remember counting something like 24 before I was 21. I'm 32 now and have slowed down the auto trading somewhat. Always looking though, sucker for punishment.
First car was XD Falcon sedan,.got rid of it after a couple of weeks (still on L plates) and bought a sh@t hot worked XC sedan, black, 351 detroit locker 9", etc, etc. very fun and very very powerful! List continues from there. Didn't like paying rego lol.

had a choice of 3 cars for my first.
1. a lj torana with milk crates for seats. but had a tidy 308 in it. Old man test drove it, came back with huge smile on face and said " NO "
2. Original a9x mint condition. Again too much power for the ol man's liking.
I ended up with a 1980 2 door escort 2 litre with the quick shift box. this thing cost me a lot of money, but damn it was a good car

I bought a Morris Minor before I was old enough to drive with an idea that I'd spend some time restoring it but didn't have the income to match the aspiration! Sold it to my brother ;-)
My first "real" car was a Ford Fiesta 1100 although I can't remember ever taking a photo so nothing to show for it.
Promoted to management at the Rover Group pretty soon after and have spent the rest of my life driving brand new cars. Now looking for a 2003/04/05 Y61 Patrol 3.0 Di SVE as a "third car" in our family of two drivers... ;-)

went everywhere in it , sold to mate for $450 as fixed radiator, brought it back for $500 as new radio fitted.
that changed hands 5 times, last time I saw it was selling for $2500. think sedans are a waste of time
either owned a wagon or ute, but gotta love a ute IMO

1973 series 3 landrover. Hadnt changed design much since the late 40s when they first came out. Shifting gears was like stiring a pot of coal. 4 wheel drum brakes. Was more effective to open the door and use my feet to stop. No aircon but constant heating. Was painful in the warmer months. Always had a set of ear muffs in the car too otherwise my ears would bleed on the longer trips. Still have it too.

Bought a pristine '67 Falcon. It had a 170 pursuit engine with a three speed crunch box. Had it 18 mths before it was T-boned. Got $600 from the other driver. I used the wreck as a bush bomb for a while; then stripped it and sold the shell for $50.

In the UK. An Austin Cambridge A60 sedan. Not sure what year but think it would have been mid sixties. Scrapped it after breaking a brake bleed nipple off. Getting it fixed was going to cost more than the car was worth!
First car in Australia, in 1987 was a Holden HQ Premier wagon, a '73 model I think, 253 motor & Trimatic auto. Car was named 'Nellie' & was a great car. All sorts of things went wrong with it over the several years we had it, but the electric rear window never failed! Loved the motor & the 'kickdown' on the auto. It limited slip diff took us to places that other non 4wd's couldn't manage. Still think the HQ's are great looking cars.

Bought it off the local Holden dealer after my Dad traded it on a 308 HQ Statesman.
Then onto the Torana's, first a nice little mission brown LC four door then an original LC GTR 186, triples (Dual throat strongberg std), 30/70 cam, lowered to the hilt. Woohoo,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, oh where have the years gone my friend,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,
