Hi I have just joined the forum after purchasing a 97 RX diesel Patrol. I have read ots of archived information and am amazed by the great information available, much appreciated. I have posted a question about my gearbox whining noise if anyone can offer any advice. Thankyou

G'day mate I'm a newby as well. My gear box is exactly the same. I've tried differents oils and had mechanics at work have a look and it all seems fine so I wouldn't stress too much.

Have you noticed this gearboc sound when towing heavy loads? See similar comments to another new member here: http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?25166-Whining-sound-from-gearbox-1-2-3-and-5th&p=460127#post460127

My two cents:
I've heard that mixing normal gearbox fluid (75w90) 50/50 with a lighter oil (even auto DXIII) will reduce the noise. I have a GU and some mates with GQs who have mixed there fluid and swear by it (especially on those cold winter mornings). Seeing as the gearbox is not under high compression, or combustion I don't see any major risks in doing this and have had no problems since doing the 50/50 mix.
