View Full Version : Whining sound from gearbox 1,2, 3 and 5th

Hi I just bought my first GQ patrol and so I am new to the forum. ....there is an annoying whining noise in 1, 2, 3 and 5th gear when under accelaration. 4th gear is incredibly quiet. I noted this was mentioned up above in an earlier post. Does anyone have any technical ideas on how to minimise or eliminate the noise. The gearbox was a second hand one put in just 20,000 km ago and the previous owner of 12 years who maintained the car very well said that the noise was there when the box went in and it hasn't got any worse? Why would 4th be quiet and the others noisy? and how can in minimise it?

Regards Ian

My gearbox is the same and has been for 100,000 km. 4th is quiet because it is direct 1:1 ratio and doesn't put load through the countershaft like every other gear does

Welcome to the forum InkWells2 (interesting name!)

I've heard that mixing normal gearbox fluid (75w90) 50/50 with a lighter oil (even auto DXIII) will reduce the noise. I have a GU and some mates with GQs who have mixed there fluid and swear by it (especially on those cold winter mornings). Seeing as the gearbox is not under high compression, or combustion I don't see any major risks in doing this and have had no problems since doing the 50/50 mix.
Let us know your thoughts on this.

There is two main causes in my mind, damage to gear faces (very unlikely to have damage to all gears hardening), or the main shaft pilot bearing or mating surfaces (between main shaft and input shaft, it is under a load in every gear except 4th).

I haven't noticed excessive metal during oil changes.

I will strip my gearbox when i change engines and see, but that doesn't help as its still months off.

Interesting about the lighter oil mix, I was thinking sort of the opposite to this and was considering adding Lucas gear oil conditioner 1L to a gearbox oil change but I think that is a thicker material (heavy honey like oil ) from memory.

Thanks ... I have done this oil mixture replacement and also added a $25 tube of NULON G70 gearbox goop that is supposed to help with noise...I haven't driven far maybe a few kms and maybe it is a smidgen quieter at least it oesn't seem worse. I'll keep you posted.

There has been some negative publicity around the Lucas oil conditioner.
