Keyless entry not working

I've got a '05' and the keyless entry has stopped working it was a bit on the piss before but then I took the car for a little swim (bottom of door stuff) and it's totally stopped working, the key opens and shuts all the other door locks.
Mechanic said that remotes die and get a new one which I did (friggin costly) reprogrammed and still nothing
Anyone got any ideas as to where to look or what it can be ???

pull the remote apart spray ,dry, replace the 1620 battery I think.
To re-programme the remote is not that hard, and remote is $80
well that what I paid a year ago
