View Full Version : Dyno vs road tuning?

Looking to get my car tuned since I installed the turbo. There is a local bloke in town who tunes diesels but only road tunes them not dyno tunes them. It will cost me $100. I will have to travel an hr away to one of the next towns if I want it dyno tuned at a similar cost.

What's your opinions on each option.

The problem with dynos is that one very important factor gets harder especially on turbocharged engines. The turbo response time and the tractability in real situation. On a dyno you can load the engine up and wait for it to bring the max output but that does not translate to real world situation exactly.
What dyno will give is the measurable results under certain conditions, road test with appropriate timing gear will give your response under load. If this bloke produces recorded figures before and after than fine otherwise go dyno.

I've been "road tuning" mine for the last few months, as in no hurry
ATM I feel its just about right, heaps of pull quick off the mark. I
would get it dynoed but what are they going to do that I'm not already doing.
I'd go the road tune as that translate into real world conditions

I think the only thing not measurable on the dyno is air ram effect on a forward facing snorkel, especially for a petrol carby engine.

When we stuck the Denco turbo kit (Tubo Dynamics at that stage) on the GQ TD 42 in 1990/91 the injector pump specialist who sold me the kit and helped to fit it road tuned it and it hasn't been changed since.

I did ask at the time if I'm paying you to do the job how come I'm doing all the work. He replied so if something goes wrong you'll know what to do and how to fix it. Its 2013 and touching wood I've never had to do anything to the set up other than to make sure the oil and filters get changed every 5000km when it gets serviced.

Took about an hour with him setting things and me driving back and forth with specific targets/ settings to reach on his guages while he stood on the side of the road and watched and looked and sniffed (for diesel smoke etc I guess)

I suspect he knew / knows what he was / is doing. He gets pumps and stuff sent to him from all over Aust. to be be done up.
Based on the above road tuning as long as you have the right person doing it IMHO

How can you road tune a CRD Diesel or DI for that mater? I would have thought a Dyno had to be used. Other wise one would have to keep stopping to adjust. There are limited tunings from ECU ???

No matter what you do on a dyno it would have to be followed by a road test surely.
A dyno has to be more accurate in recording changes, seat of the pants tuning has too many variables.
So I have contradicted myself and yes I have no idea LOL

Thanks for the responses fellas. If i can ever get hold of the local tuner i'll give him a go if i'm not happy with the results i'll go dyno but i know people who used him and have been happy

I assumed you have a TD4.2 Is that correct? That's what my comments referred to. As far a computer chipped stuff, No Comment!

That being the case I stick with my comment that it depends on having the right bloke to do the job. IE SET UP THE INJECTOR PUMP AFTER THE TURBO GOES ON.
Who installed the turbo?
What kit was it?
Was it an oil cooled schwitzer with the full exhaust in the kit?
Did you get the oil cooler and the timer at the same time?
So what towns are you near?
