Hello all,
Do you think the front axles and cv joins on a GQ are strong enought for 36" tires???
My GQ is a shorty TD42, front ARB locker and 4.62 R&P. The tires I ordered are the TSL Q78, Close to 36" tires, but narrow: about 11".
What do you thing?? I need chromoly axles and CV join???
Somebody with 36" tires experience?
Thank you. :)

They will be fine mate. YOu should allow for some mechanical Sympathy when driving though or Yes you Will smash the CVs. It is inevitable that you will break them and i have broken 2 in an hour. I carry a spare of each in the car strapped to my cargo barrier.
I have upgraded to a front diff from the later model GU as the CVs are a bigger cage. but you also get bigger brakes which are a winner for me.
So if you very concerned and expect to do the damage then plan for it. swap out to CM CVs or swap out to the GU front end and then CMCVs ;)

Just remember a shorty will lift a ft wheel easily so be gentle with the right foot especially when the ft wheels aren't straight ahead.

Watch for the front wheel bearings coming loose unless you've done the gu upgrade.

Thank you for your answer mates!!
I will order the CM axles... :)
I found in USA CM complete axles for about $900 usd, Trail Gear.
It's true, the shorty's lift the Wheel easly, but the trails in Panama are not rock crawler, we have plenty of mud, deep mud!!, and rivers... but not usually rocks. Really I don't like the shortys too hight and too big tires.. but I will be the smallest tires in the group!!! Everybody run 38" in their Jeep's and Toyota's, and someone with 42" tires and GM 14B axles!!!!!! The Suzuki's runs 35" or 36" with Toyota Hilux axles... :) So my plan is to ride my Patrol with CM axles and CV's with 36". Seen from this point of view I am very conservative.. heheh

Shorty's not ideal as the track is nearly the same as its wheelbase, ideally a cut down wagon or a lengthened shorty 300mm is ideal'
Have seen the mud in your country and I mean mud its everywhere, First I thought it was New Zealand, don't forget some PICs
This pic is from a member here from your neck of the woods, I think it has a 4" body lift 6" spring with 22" rims and 37" tyres, I love this Patrol

That is true, but also for mudding is very important the weight. A light car is much better for extrem mud. In this respect, it is better the shorty's.
Very nice this Patrol with 37'. Especialy the engine!! :)

The wagons are only about 40kgs heavier than the shorties. It all counts I know, but it means that a shorty with two people in it and a full tank will weigh more than a wagon with one person and half a tank (for example).
Shorties are cool though:-)

I find that hard to believe. There would be more than 40kg difference just in the extra body the wagon has. The shorty has less chassis, shorter drive shaft, less interior components and only one fuel tank.

I compare my LWB GU with my "new" SWB GQ, and the are a lot of difference on weight !! I have never put in a tilted, but I can feel the difference just driving, and the documents of my GU LWB says 2400 kg, and the GQ SWB says 1950 kg !!!
Some example the trucks in Panama:
