Pulled the clutch fan of today after reading a thread some where about rebuilding them. Pulled the hib apart and no oil just a heap of grease. Taking this isnt supposed to be in there or at least there should be oil in there. I bought the oil from toyota to add to it. Is it just a matter of filling one half up with the oil and bolting back together? Is the grease supposed to b in there? There was a thread about it but not sure if it was on here or another site on how to rebuild them

Hi mate when I did mine I wiped it clean and then added the new fluid. When you say grease? Is is just white lithium? Or is the fluid contaminated?

White/grey grease and a fair bit of it. I can grab a picture later today to show you. So when u added the oil did you just add it to tone half then bolt it back up?

That looks wrong to me. How were your engine temps? It may have just made the hub always engaged, regardless of temps so not cause overheating, but just constant load on engine?

That looks like black mud! I don't think it would work well at all like that.

I'm not sure your going to rebuild that mate! Looks like junk to my sorry bud.
The fan functions by using a heat sensative spring build into the front section that you can not get to, as it changes shape it opens a valve that is also not serviceable and draws in the fluid and actuates the fan hub. I could not see a way of cleaning that internal reservoir out and I'd say your heat spring is rooted mate.

It used to sit on a 1/4 to 1/2 under normal driving but get up to the last marker when going up hill loaded with trailer or not was always the same. Was hoping to sort it out with a fan rebuild as i have flushed the rad and changed the thermostat but was just a standard one maybe need to try a highflow one.

About 130.00 mate....I have just done mine ....also check in between the fan blades for minute cracks.....and as far as i am concerned it is be3st to put a new water pump on at the same time due to pulling everything off to do the fan clutch ( unless of course you know it had a new one recently)
mine was heating up if i sat still at roadworks etc....new fan clutch and fan....walla....now perfect
I forgot...take your fan with you when you go to buy it...there is different ones for different bladed fans...I told them mine was a 7 blade fan and still got the wrong one ...the holes in the clutch and the fan didnt line up....cheers
have to agree with previous posts...dont wast your time with that one !!!....cheers

If you have not opened then just take it back mate. You can get a new fan hub for $95 on eBay.

try Patrolapart mate...good blokes , helpful and if you are interstate , postage is quick....230.00 is BS....I got mine from QLD Patrol and they are considered to be an expensive mob...
Patrolapart..0397351119.....the fans can have a different amount of blades , as I said , mine is a 7 blade fan..apparently amount of blades denotes a different fan clutch....as said ...they are on ebay and they also state how many blades....maybe the mistake with mine was just that ...a mistake....either take your fan or measure the hole centres and tell them if on the phone and on ebay some of them state the hole centres for you....cheers

Is one fan better then the other. My hole spacing is approx 135mm across the centre and the top hub is 135mm and the bottom one is 134mm. Will 1mm matter

How do you know if these fans are in need of service? Mine looks to be always spinning. When I shut it down it free spins for 3 seconds afterward. Is this normal?

no mate..should have a small amount of resistance..turn it by hand and feel if it has any resistance..should not just free spin
just checked mine with it being a new one ...it stops dead when engine shutdown growler

Definitely has some resistance
menace 2
24th December 2013, 10:29 AM
the resistance would normally not allow the fan to turn a quarter of a turn if you try to spin it....hard to define the amount of resistance in words...sorry mate.....what is your temp. doing when driving ?

So would mine fan of been working at all with the way it was? Or would it have been permanently running? Just curious as if it was always running and still getting hot climbing hills it oculd be much worse with a properly working fan
