That all depends on what you want from your rig and your finances. Also depends on what has already been done and what it is gu/gq, petrol/diesel, 4.2td/tb/3L/2.8????? But the usual starters are tyres, lift, snorkel, nads, gauges.

As krbrooking says what have you got, what do you want to do with it.
Daily drive, day trips, weekend trips, touring, mountain climbing, beach, the options are endless.

Suspension is one of the first bits to have a look at. Usually the standard shocks and springs are not much good off road or when towing a reasonable sized caravan or trailer. Chances are - if its second hand - they need replacing anyway.

I disagree I'd be doing the suspension last after you have fitted all your heavy accessories, dual batteries, winch ,bullbar etc.
Like everyone is saying what do you want to do with your 4x4 is it only for the weekend or do you want to camp etc on extended trips.
Snorkels are great for water crossings and convoy duties[dusty]. I take it your 4.2 is a wagon?

Where too start....?
Take out the dicki seats out the back.
Get a snorkel
Get a set of good muddies
Tint your windows
Upgrade the intercooler
Get a NADS set up put in
Upgrade the exhaust
Some rock sliders
Add a UHF radio and aerial
Front locker
2" lift
Rear bar
Now your all set.

Agree as well, need to know what it weighs then fit correct gear under it.

get a good set of All Terrains if you plan on doing a lot of sand driving Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib are good so are BFG, Yokohama do a good sand tyre. Even bridgestone desert duelers are good. these tyres bag really easily when you let them down muddies have a stronger side wall so you have to let them down more to get the same sand performance from them.
if your into going bush then get muddies but most A/Ts will get you there.
Recovery gear - basic snatch strap with shackles is good
shovel - a must when 4wdriving
sand flag - if your dune driving
2way - always handy even a hand held is good
compressor and tyre gauge - supacheap sell tyre guages cheap and are acurate. a compressor is good to have when you need to air up ebay have them for about $70 for a cheap one that will do the job

I'd start by reading instead of posting 25 threads for the manuals.. But thats just me..
Hope ya hang around as the info the members contain is so much more than any manual can supply..

Good list Mego ..... although tinted windows aren't a necessity, and I would add an Air Compressor and Tyre Gauge

doesn't need NADS Rear bar you can live without. But maybe a winch, but we'll never know

Thought that earlier TD, there were not many responses to all the info he was getting.
Never know, he will get himself sorted and stay active here.

Yeah bit of a shame as a new member myself. Use the search function, sort thru the relevant topics and post when you have some advice or are stuck! Working for me so far......

My advice, get the basics done first if not already on then move onto the suspension depending on the current condition of the existing.
I'm setting mine up to be a decent tourer that can still handle the tougher lines if need be.
Mine was bog stock with only the factory alloy bar so my order of mods so far is as follows;
ARB Commercial Winch Bar
Snorkel
Roof Rack
Duel batt set up
Next up;
UHF
Audio upgrade
Rock sliders
Rear bar
Wheels and tyres
Suspension
I had a lot of extras left over from my last rig like spotties, recovery gear, first aid kit etc that just went straight into the Partol.
