I was thinking of putting 305/70/16 on the patrol, currently have 285/75/16, and was wondering if the diameter are any different as I only have a 2cm gap at the moment when I enter the garage, therefor do not want to lift any higher, just want the width. Apparently they are suppose to be both 33's.

hi Ben,

The first number is the width of the tread touching the road, ie 285mm. The second number is the sidewall size, given as a percentage, in the case of your 285/75/16, it means that the sidewall is 75% of 285mm being 213.75mm. The 16 is the size of the rim in inches.

So to work out the size difference between the two, 305 minus 70%= 213.5. This means that there is very little differnce in height but there is a difference in width so you should still have your 2cm of clearance.

The main things you will notice is a wider track on your truck, giving better grip, stability and ability over soft sand, loose soil etc but, with all mods, there is a downside too. In this case, as there is more rubber to push along, it usually uses more fuel. (I prefer to have the wider profile off road but if touring, stick with the skinnier tyre.)

Hope this helps.

Have a 2006 4.2 td, 2 inch lift kit, aftermarket 16 inch csa alloy mags, not much of offset, so 305/70 should fit

Great web site, now need to work out width of rims as need 8 inch minimum for 305/70. They measure from rim to rim at 9.5 inches, but not sure if this is the right area to measure.

I run 33x12.5x15s on 8x15 rims so the 305s will be fine on 8" wide rims

I got 2011 3lt, and fitted the BFG KM2, 305/70-16 with a neg13 offset steel rim.
Just took off the front mud flap and trimmed the inside corner 37656, it gets close maybe 25mm so I cut it off just in case.
