Hi All

can anybody shed light on the reason why during rotating the ignition key to turn the motor off the starter will momentarily crank the motor

i have had various electrical issues, ranging from pertronix unit failing, points failing, resulting in no spark at all

to starter motor just clicking, this is when i get the alternator cranking the motor

then all of a sudden all will be good, then everything stops

i have a 88 gq with dual fuel

cheers

I'd be cleaning and re doing the posts on the battery.
Use some scotch brite scourer , when all nice and tight
spray with terminal cleaner
Also check connections on starter motor
Check your timing as well

as per Threedogs Post but would also check the Earth to the Motor

Sounds like a faulty ignition switch.

You may also need a relay fitted to the starter motor to help overcome voltage drop.

Hi guys , from an Auto Electricians view , I would be replacing the ignition switch/key barrel, not shure whether its a complete unit or if you can just replace the switching section 1st, then check earths from battery to motor and body,if the earth leads are piddley little wires, you can add a heavier guage earth strap somewhere solid, physically sand a small portion of paint away to bare metal , obviously just enough for the earth lug to make solid contact, hope this helps.
