thanks guys so with a diesel do you lose much power at all? and what sort of fuel economy are you guys getting? i know it doesnt matter but it would be good to be able to drive it every day without taking out a second loan lol?

Turbo the petrol I've seen these produce big figures at the rear wheels ,
and 14.5sec, 1/4 mile times not out of the question

The answers you're seeking are so varied.
Fuel usage can vary from over 30lt per 100 k's for a tb42 carby driven hard all the way down to low 11lt per 100 k's for an easily driven 2.8 diesel.
It's all about compromise.
If you are thinking about big engine mods like an ls1 conversion, turbo'd tb42 or skyline efi then also think about how much fuel you could buy for the cost of the mods. Eg: $4000 - $5000 for an ls1 conversion is a lot of petrol money to put through your existing engine.

Petrol vs diesel comes down to personal choice.
Do you have friends with 4wds that you can test run?

Also if you try the search function on this forum you may find some helpfully threads regarding different engine pros and cons

What sort of driving will you be doing? Daily driver? Tourer? Weekend basher?

For daily driving my old TB42 on gas was cheaper to drive than my TD42 but a lot less power and far less driving before filling up. For a tourer I would not go anything but TD42 and a weekend basher, well a turbo TB42 would be sweet.

Hey muddymayhem, if this interests you, have a look for bigrigs thread in the members ride section. I thinks it's called: Tank, big grey and ugly. He turbo'd his efi TB42 and has lots of info and even dyno runs on there. He got more power AND economy AFTER he turbo'd it.

a TD42 turbo will have more grunt for towing and better economy. Not to mention sound so much better =]
I had the TB42 on gas and it's a good motor but the TD42 is so much better for me.

For heavy towing 4.2 tdi . I tow a 2.5t signature . My dad tows 3.2t whitley . And a good mate tows a 24 ft plate comerical fishing boat . Dont ask the weight when loaded We all have GU4.2tdi .manuals.
Forgot the brother in law tows a bertram bahemar behind a gq 4.2 turbo as well,

As for fuel economy non of us know , if ya gotta worry about the economy ya can't afford the toys

How was it cheaper on gas Winnie? Gas might be half the cost but you go half as far on it. I regularly see 13-14/100 out of my td42ti running 25psi and will see 17-18/100 towing nearly 3t. Sharees GQ ute will do under 12/100.

I think what he means is dollars per hundred kms. I pay 77c/L for gas and get 24/100. For it to be cheaper to run a diesel, it would need to be either paying $1.44 and getting less then 12/100 or paying $1.55 like it is now and getting sub 10s.

Small FYI, I drove to and from melb earlier this year, did 4500 km approx, used around $900 in fuel. 17/100 on gas is pretty good at 77c/L

Im not saying the diesel is cheaper than the gas, I just don't think there is anything really between the 2. Your calcs are a little off, you would have to getting 12/100 at $1.54 per litre, as 77x2 is 154 not 144, so 12/100 out of the diesel is certainly achievable at those costs. You must have a big gas tank too at 17/100 over 4500km is 765L of gas which equates to an average of 85c/litre and a lot of fills. So if you double the 85c you are now at $1.70/L for diesel. I could do the same trip and only have to stop 4 times for fuel but at pretty much the same cost as yourself.

Its all horses for course really. The diesels (td42) hold their value but cost more in servicing costs, the diesels (td42) will more often than not go 500k without to many issues at all. The petrol (tb42) are cheaper to buy but don't hold their value either, unless they have been looked after extremely well by 500k they are going to be fairly tired. I really don't think there really is much between the 2. I have never towed with a tb42 so cant comment on them but I know the TD42's don't differ much between towing and not towing.

They weren't my exact figures, but they are close enough for argument sake. And yea I had to stop for fuel a heap. But it worked well with driver fatigue so it didn't really both me. Plus with girls in the car, needed to stop every 5 mins :p

A decent turbo and some fuel pump mods and you will be suprised at the increase in power, and the silver top is supposed to be better for that.
