Here's my thread for posting about my old Patrols. I'll give a little history on each one and some pics for good measure. My build thread on Patrol 4x4 is up to 10 pages and nothing too interesting has happened, so no ones missed much.
1. 1984 Nissan Patrol MK SWB SD33T - "Old Red" - Purchased June 2011.
This is the first Patrol I ever bought, the first car I ever bought in fact. I remember going to look at it and it really was a sight for sore eyes! Faded paint, bit of rust, rough inside and out, but from the first time I went for a ride in it I loved it! It was rough and loud but it was great! Before buying it I was leaning towards a GQ, but this thing really kick started my love (obsession? addiction?) for these old Patrols. I picked her up for the sum of $900 and then drove it 2.5 hours home where it didn't miss a beat.... Until the next day when I found out about the cracked head gasket it had. What started as a quick fix and rego turned into a major 6 month restoration project, as annoying as it was as an 18 year old to have no car, the first time I drove it with my plates on it I knew every second spent on it was worth it. I loved that car, and still do. It was beautifully restored, the detail and effort that went into that car was immense.
Unfortunately at some point teenage stupidity and a lack of experience came into play and I crashed her... A really bad rollover, the car rolled onto its back, then back onto the wheels. I still have the car and give the engine a run once a month or so, I can't bring myself to scrap it. I one day hope to rebuild it again, even if it doesn't see the road.

2. 1982 Nissan Patrol MQ SWB - "Yella" - Purchased March 2013
This one wasn't my best decision if I'm honest... No engine, busted front diff (PO never mentioned that...) 5 speed, had a 308 and straight LPG conversion at some point. It was originally purchased to donate its body and possibly chassis to Old Red to bring her back, but this thing was too rough (I'm not so much a perfectionist, but I like my cars to be in the best possible nick). I ended up selling it as is. It needed new doors, glass, interior and a huge clean up, the paint job was rough too so ideally that would need doing. I sold this car at a small loss, and its currently on Gumtree for a lot more than I sold it for...

3. 1986 Nissan Patrol MK SWB L28 - Never got a name - Purchased July 2013
I must say I really like this car, its almost original, interior is near perfect, steel canopy, only 150,000km. Unfortunately the PO treated the car pretty rough and it sustained a fair amount of panel damage. This was my project for a few months, and it won't take much to get it on the road, but its money I just don't have at the moment. Aside from the L28 (I love my SD's) I really like this car and am very reluctant to sell it, but i might be forced to soon.

4. 1986 Nissan Patrol MK SWB SD33T - "The Albino" - Purchased November 2013
My newest edition, once again steel canopy being a late model deluxe. This car is little bit rougher than the other 1986 I have, and the dash is the worst colour in history as its been painted bright blue! This car has clearly been restored from a paddock bomb and done on the cheap. The paint isn't great, interior is mismatched, many parts are not original. However aside from that it is a good unit, very little rust, the engine has 380,000km on it and feels very strong, it goes well for an 80kw 4x4 and has virtually no blowby. It's also very close to roadworthy, the most major issue being loose wheel bearings and worn king pin bearings.

Fixed up a few little issues to get The Albino a bit closer to roadworthy.
The list I got was
1. One tail light appearing as bright as brake light - easy fix, replaced the 21w globe with a 5w
2. Top up brake fluid - Done, I forgot to do that after I bled the brakes last week... Oops.
3. Fuel leak at lift pump - Hose clamp wasn't properly tightened
4. Horn not operational - Had a little fiddle with the combination switch, it was too far back and needed to be moved forward about 10mm
5. Oil leak near turbo - I still need to fix this.
6. Wheel bearings loose and king pin bearings worn - swivel hub rebuild kit ordered. $170 and it includes wheel bearings, very happy with that!
7. Spongey brake pedal - I assume this is because of the loose wheel bearings.
8. Wiper blades - Done, another easy fix.
Unfortiunately I can't do any more work until the weekend as I am heading away for a couple of days - Going to a resort in Falls Creek, so I guess that makes up for it!

Doing the swivel hub rebuild is a feel good task once completed :D and a good excuse to buy a lot of special tools, just ask my wife ;)
Keep the pics coming!!!

I do feel good now that I've done the swivel hubs, cheers The Viking. :)
There was a bit of swearing and cursing though!
I've also pulled all the intake piping off the car to see where the oil leak around the turbo is. It will either be blow by or a blown oil seal. I removed all the intake piping to check if there was still oil getting through, but of course I sprayed carby cleaner in the turbo first to get rid of the muck, so I don't know if what sprayed me in the face was carby cleaner or carby cleaner + oil! I will have to double check this tomorrow. There were also a couple of loose bolts on the compressor housing, so I tightened those up, but I doubt that will make a difference.
I have also ordered a catch can, which hopefully will stop oil getting into (and out of) my turbo. The engine seems fairly strong and doesn't feel down on compression, but its got a lot of blow by too.... Ah well, it should hold on for a while yet and if it doesn't I've got a nice young (295,000km) engine to drop in with almost new (25,000km) head and gasket.

Turbo's have been swapped, turns out the old one was stuffed and brakes have been bled.
Booked it in for RWC again on Monday which is unfortunate as I was hoping to have the car rego'd by the weekend.
Either way, I'm just glad its almost ready.

Thanks mate. They're good old things!
It looks okay in the photos, but the white car really needs a heavy cut and polish. The paint has the texture of house paint!

The white car got rego'd yesterday! Feel good to back in an old MK again.
Gotta sat this ones not as slow as I remember the red one being.
Fairly happy with it it sits on 100km/h okay but prefers 90km/h, its not too noisy inside and it doesn't leak in heavy rain. It could still benefit from a better stereo system, some noise insulation and it still idles high and revs down slow... Can't get to the bottom of that one.
I also fitted an ARB bar today. It looks a bit better than the alloy bar it had before. :)
Apologies for the terrible photo quality - my phones camera lens is scratched quite badly.

Took the old girl for a nice long 450km run today. She went really well, which I'm impressed with as it was the cars first long run in God knows how long.
Not too loud in the cab either, even with no sound insulation I could quite easily hold a conversation in the car at freeway speed.

Gave the old beast a late birthday today... well, actually yesterday.
Oil flush, new oil and new filter and an injector and pump cleaner. Happy to say that the old girl idles a little smoother now and is a tad more responsive since the injector clean.
The old girl may not be perfect, but she is bloody brilliant!
Not as good as my first MK, nothing can ever replace that car, but the next best thing to it. I'm happy to say I'm stoked with her :)

Car has been on the road for just over a month, so time for a one month status report:
Its falling apart... kinda...
- Fuel leak at the tank, drops quite a lot. Need to find somewhere to store almost 80l of diesel while I drop the tank. Tightened all the connections I can see, any ideas where it could be leaking from? its somewhere towards the front of the tank. Anyone dropped an MQ tank before?
- RHR drum needs a rebuild and the clip that prevents the tensioning screw from turning is buggered.
- ignition barrell is stuffed. It no longer springs back from the start position to on, so if i don't do it manually it keeps the starter engaged so I'll need to rebuild it or get a new one keyed.
Hopefully after that she'll last a while.

might be leaking from the fuel filler neck, or the fuel gauge sender unit. tanks themselves are pretty easy to drop just download the manual and it should tell you the way to do it.
drums are the easiest brakes to rebuild and if you get stuck take the otherside off and its a mirror image.

Still haven't figured out exactly where its leaking from. Filler neck is certainly a possibility as it stop leaking when I've used a bit of fuel.
Drums are pretty easy to rebuild, I was just a little annoyed that I had it all apart a couple of months ago, and now it has to come apart again all for one little retaining clip.... Ah well, has to be done.

Two nights ago i had a bit of an issue... smoke pouring out from the headlight switch, electrical smell and loss of dash lights, parkers and tail lights.... Yep, I'd melted the switch.
This is not uncommon on MK's, as the full current for the lights passes through the switch, over time a high resistance can be caused in the switch, and hence the smoke and melting.
I decided to fix the problem once and for all by upgrading the wiring loom. Its a bit of an odd setup as from the switch to the headlight connectors the circuit is -ve switched, but from the connectors to the headlights (where my loom is) the circuit is +ve switched.
Anyway, it all works well and I will post up later how I did it.

It is better to use relays for head and tail lights to minimize the current that goes through the switch and get brighter light.

Agreed. With my new loom I now have relays for the headlights.
I wasn't going to bother with the tail lights, as they are only very low current draw but if I continue to have issues in the future i will rewire them too.

So I had what I thought was a major issue with my transfer case, it would pop out of low range all the time.
After spending the last 2 months thinking I would have to drop it and source new parts etc I managed to fix the problem in a minute.
Literally one minute.
The shifter boot was on backwards.
I feel like an idiot for not noticing before, but I bought it thinking it had a stuffed transfer, so that makes me feel a bit better. :D:D

Muddies and roof rack fitted, exhaust connected back up and fridge wiring loom temporarily in place (will be done permanently once I get a dual battery system). She's all ready for her maiden camping voyage now! :)
Finally got some new pics too, and took a couple of photos with the silver shorty (which looks ghey with the crappy road tyres.
With the exhaust and muddies the MK feels like a different car. The engine is a lot quieter, but farrrrrrk me I thought it was slow with no exhaust. It feels gutless now, not as much in the top end and feels less torquey, more smoke than I remember too as I found out when accelerating heavily... oops... The muddies are worn quite unevenly from the silver car and as a result I have a pretty strong steering pull and a bit of a shake in the steering at about 80km/h, going to try swapping wheels back to front as the rears seem to have worn a little better, should have really checked that before I bolted them up.
Anyway, pic dump.
I like this pic, the old girl looks tough.

47154I actually bought old yella a few months ago and am currently doing a full rebuild with the body for my gq chassis. Once the car was stripped the body was actually in awesome condition. Just a couple panels and doors needed scrapping. She will be a mental looking rig when she's finished.

Good to see Old Yella isn't just rotting away in someone's backyard. Hope she serves you well Nezzy.
I thought I'd give a one year update on my white car... but there's not much to update.
I've had one mudflap fall off, and I bought a factory 130L long range tank. These seem very rare as this is the only one I've ever seen for sale. Other than that the old SD is still chugging away getting closer to the 400,000km mark (398 now)

Thought I should give another update for those who stumble upon this thread.
Nothing too major has happened... I fixed up some rust, fitted a VDO boost gauge and EGT gauge, boost controller and a UHF radio. I have a dual battery wiring kit waiting to be installed too, just need to source a second battery tray for that.
The old girl ticked over 400,000km early in 2015 too, up to 408,000km now and she still runs like clockwork. The old SD is a great engine.

The rust was worse than it looked from the outside, so I ground back and covered what I could in rust converter. Unfortunately I'm guessing the whole inner panel is rusty... If any more rust pokes through I think I'll have to get it professionally cut out and welded up.

First coat on, a few imperfections including some bugs that decided to fly into the wet paint. Unfortunately I forgot to take any more photos after this point.

Nice work mate. The MK shorties I absolutely love. I had an 86 Silver MK shortie. Anniversary Edition it was so it had full cloth trim, even in the canopy, the canopy was metal, not fibre glass, AND it had factory suspension seats. Not to mention all the mods done on it. I stupidly sold the car. I hunt around on Carsales and what not every week looking to for it. as I would snap it up again. I suppose it was first first, true love for Patrols....

I remember seeing a couple of photos of your old MK that you posted, she looked like a beauty :) If you still have the chassis number, you could punch that into Vicroads and that'll let you know if its still on the road.
I've been waiting for an anniversary model to pop up so I can snap it up, they're very uncommon unfortunately... They were the first appearance of the fully trimmed interior, suspension seat and steel canopy on the shorties too. GL models later got that gear, which both of my '86 shortys are. The silver shorty has a fantastic interior in near new condition, unfortunately the white shorty isn't so great, a lot of the original interior is damaged or missing. I'd like to re-trim it at some point.

I have spent the last couple of weekends stuffing around with the rear drums, and safe to say they are driving me insane.
For whatever reason the adjuster bracket will not latch properly on the RHS, and one of the drums continually adjusted too tight (they are auto adjusting drums) causing dragging, squealing and very easy locking of the rear wheels for the first few rotations of the wheels and while braking. I believe I was able to rectify the latter issue today.
The constant stuffing around, sub par performance and the fact that the drums will soon need to be machined and the shoes replaced has me looking very seriously at a disc conversion for the rear. At this stage I'm looking at using a Jackeroo disc and GQ rear caliper. The jackeroo disc is almost identical to the GQ disc, except the center hole, which is better suited to the MQ axle, and due to the GQ and MQ/MK sharing the same front pads and discs I don't believe I'll have any issues with the rear brakes overpowering the fronts.

Not much has been happening with the old girl, but I gave it a service and fixed up my catch can today, I knew when I got it that it would be pretty crap as it cost something like $25 off ebay when I got it. It was enough to make the RWC bloke happy but it was soon apparent how crap it really was - after 2 years it had at most 50ml of oil in it and I know there was much more that escaped it as it was filthy due to inadequate sealing and there was significant amounts of oil bypassing it as there is oil residue on my boost controller.
Before I shell out the money for a decent catch can I figured I would see if i could fix this one and maybe save myself some money, so I cleaned it up and pulled it apart.

This is the top 'lid' with the barbs removed, as shown there is absolutely no separation between inlet and outlet and no filter material.

As I could not find a reasonable method of installing a baffle I thought this was the next best thing, I had some old hose laying around that was a perfect fit inside the inlet barb. It was already a fairly tight fit but I smeared some sealant around the area anyway just to make sure.

I cut the hose to length, then filled the catch can with steel. When reassembling the catch can I used sealant on the top and bottom lids to prevent oil leaking out of here again.

Reassembled and ready to install again. The catch can is mounted on an L shaped bracket and held in place with a large hose clamp, the L bracket bolts up to the same mounting points as the pre-filter. I mounted here because it keeps the catch can in a fairly inconspicuous location, allows the breather hoses to be kept fairly short and still allows easy access.
All up this cost me nothing as the steel wool and hose were things I found in the shed.
I realise this setup will not work as well as a decent catch can like a Provent as there is still no baffle between the filter and catchment areas, but unfortunately I had to fill the entire catch can with steel wool (2 pads) as 1 pad would just slip down to the bottom. Looking back on it now I also wonder if I made the hose too long running to the bottom of the catch can as it will be submerged in oil before too long. Time will tell I suppose, I may modify again and try to fit a baffle in there or I might just ditch it and get a decent catch can but this will still be an improvement over what I started with.

I've gone and bought another shorty....
5th Patrol, and my 5th shorty. Might have to go for an LWB or ute next to mix it up a bit, but I probably shouldn't be thinking about that right now since there's currently 6 Patrols between my old man and I, 5 of which are on our property!
This one is a 1985 in silver, decent paint aside from a few scratches, there are a few dings on the body that I;ll try and fix up. Engine is an N/A SD33 backed by a 5 speed, it was originally an SD33T, but that engine has a flogged out keyway which I am contemplating repairing, since it appears to be an otherwise good engine... that and a 4 speed box+xfer case were included in the sale.
Interior is in overall good shape, the seats have no tears in fabric, and the rear seat in particular looks quite good, the carpets are dirty with a few stains but they should come up okay with a good clean. Some parts of the dash are quite sun damaged though and will require attention. There are a few extras which I will be keeping regardless of whether I keep or sell the car: the rear bar with wheel carrier (I have a body mounted one currently that rattles the tailgate a lot), the A/C (never had a car with A/C before, except the silver L28, but that didn't work) and the LED light bar, I think its a cheapy but its better than what I have now which is a pair of ancient magnum spotties that are no improvement over my high beams.
Pic time!

The worst of the body damage, caused by the spare tyre opening into the body.

Dirty oil, but no sludge build up! My current engine has a fair bit of sludge under the rocker cover.

Rocker cover is clean enough to eat off! Not bad for an almost 31 year old donk.

The top thermostat cover was very clean too, as was the radiator in the car, the only corrosion was a small patch of surface rust starting due to sitting around. The rest of the engine still had coolant in it, so it should be fine. That once again, is better than my current donk when I got it, which had stop leak poured in it by a previous owner to stop a leaking radiator and that resulted in a hard, black build up throughout the cooling system.
