1993 TD42 Grinding noise from engine (water pump?)

Hi guys,
My mav has a dull grinding noise coming from the engine. It is a 1993 mavrick with a TD42 with 480,000ks. the grinding noise speeds up and gets louder when the revs increase. I recently replaced the radiator and water pump and that was when i noticed the noise. I have removed the fan shroud as i thought it may be hitting the fan but is wasn't. The water pump was a $60 one off ebay has anyone else had trouble with these? Is there any thing else i can do to rule out the water pump with out replacing it again?

Get a long stick/screwdriver and place it to your ear
and try to isolate where noise is coming from

Take the belt off and see if the noise is still there, it may even be a belt noise, spray some water on it and see if the noise goes away.
