hey fellas,
Im waiting to put a dual battery system in my 98 gu 2.8 but i cannot justify spending $200 on a battery bracket / tray.
Anyone got any cheaper options that you have done, or have made your own if so how.
Im also not to keen on putting it in the back either.
Cheers

Can you make one?? There not very difficult.
I based mine on the Arb one. 40x40x2.5 angle for the base, 30x2.5 flat for the straps which tie back to the overflow bottle, and a few Conveyor belt strips to add a little protection.
I bought the tie down setup for $15..
Ill photo it if you like??

No disrespect to anyone here for making there own, this is just my unqualified opinion. Be care just making one up. It carries and supports a lot of weight and substandard manufacture or install can result in guard cracking.

Funny you mention this as the factory battery tray has buggered the guard on the gq, the aftermarket one on the other side is fine!

You will find that failure is due to the hardware used, some installation kits have screws {no good}
you need big penny washers or mudguard washers to spread the load and use Nyloc nuts and Loctite.
A battery is about 20kg plus bouncing up and down. even the wing nuts holding the battery stay on, turf them for
Nylocs. The battery tray its self is fine just think about it and over engineer how you fit it.
Also check after any big trips. If possible use 8mm rods to hold your battery in place with a decent cross member.
Keep your battery clean as this will prevent corrosion rotting everything.
From memory GQs suffer from broken AUX battery trays if not fitted correctely

It's the factory tray that is failing not the aftermarket one.
Also any time you use nyloc nuts in a hot environment expect them to come loose.
