Hi, at the moment I have MICKY THOMPSON 305/70/16 MTZ on my Nissan Patrol GU (1998) which look awesome but use too much fuel.
I am doing only 20% off road and 80% road and looking for new tyres (and try selling my micky thompsons).
I have 2' suspension and I am a bit lost in which tyres I should take (and which size). Which brand would you recommend and should I switch to 285?

Mickey T have got a new tyre which replaces the old 4 rib all terrain and looks a little more chunky, might be perfect for you. I would go with 285 myself, more of a standard size.

jeez guys, good way to put new members off......... kind of reminds me of another forum that folk on here bitch about!!!!!!!!!!
Danny, welcome aboard mate. What sort of off roading do you do? BFG AT's are a good all rounder, Mickey Thompson STZ could be the way to go depending on what sort of off roading you do........ have a look here http://www.mickeythompsontires.com.au/index.php?page=STZ.
Good luck and happy hunting

An a/t would definitely suffice for the amount of offroad you are doing, If you go down to a 285 it will be a little easier to push them on the truck, I guess it really comes down to what type of tread you want? Aggressive or a more conservative pattern? Price might play a part too?
I like my Kumho a/ts fairly aggressive but got a good price at around $240 a tyre, and that's for a 285/75/16 too! If you want a pic of the tread let me know.
Cheers,
Eric.

Wow! I insulted some people enormously with missing the introduction!
Thank you Clunk. I haven't done any offroading yet, but I am planning on doing just the simple stuff. It needs to get me from A to B in national parks on 4wd tracks. In addition, I am planning on a big trip along the complete coast of Australia and I wouldn't mind to go off road.
I am a student, so ideally I want to have good value for money. I saw that the coopers AT have 90.000km warranty (not with offroading) and heard good stories about them. Whats your opinon about them?

I like the aggressive look of the tyres I have at the moment, but in the end its all about functionality (and being a student money). Any idea how many km's the Kumho last for? Thanks!

Coopers will not honour their warranty, they have so many get out of jail cards it's not funny. I've got Maxxis AT700 and they are a good tyre on the road and on the dirt/rock tracks, but not great in mud. Pretty cheap tyre and are performing quite well.

Yeah one mate got one out of Mickey T but it was a LOT of work to get them to honour it. Reckons it wasn't worth it in the end.

Yep my old yokohama geolander. I sliced the side wall badly on rocks the slice was about 120mm long and about 1mm from completly going through the side wall.
The had less than 2000km on them I bent back to the dealer and told the truth about how it happened, showed them my warrenty car and 15 min later drove out with a new tyre

If your worried about fuel consumption than 285s are a good compromise. Still a little bigger than standard. If you want a good all terrain than something like bfg all terrains are ok. Also done some looking around myself and nitto terrain tamer look very nice.

How long is a piece of string mate? I guess you'd expect 40-50k kms out of them if you maintained them... read: frequent wheel alignments, balances and roatations every 5k.
So far I've done over 5k and there is no excessive wear on them, I was in the same boat as you when I was shopping for tyres, Funds were tight, so to me to buy kumho which is a fairly decent brand and not a generic no name one I haven't heard of, I was very happy with.
This is the tread pattern on the Kumho Roadventure

I recently drove a cruiser with some pretty decent Wranglers on it but cant recall exact type went well through sand gravel and on road with not too much noise. fairly aggressive tread but seemed to balance off and on road pretty well .. just a thought

I haven't seen many muddys or wide tires on 4wd in the outback, at least not with the locals. I got my car with skinny 235/85/16 Hercules Terra Trac and that has been a top tire. Not many uses them but a lot of people remembers them as a really good tire. Skinny tires with a lot of side wall makes them really good when you deflate them :D

Funny you say that.
A lot of people think that when you let the tyres down, you are making it wider using the sidewall.
Fact is that you are increasing the length of tread in contact with the ground (a bit like tracks on an excavator).
Skinny tyres with tall sidewalls are good for 'cutting' through the soft top layers to get to firmer ground underneath.
Just some of the useless info I have floating around in my head.

Hi,
What do you think about COOPER STT (All season - MT)? I already bought them and have about 7k of mixed on/off-road (about 50-50); they look fine. No excessive wear and no cuts (yet).
Anyone here having more experience with them?

Yeah Stretch had done over 100k kms on his. Rotated every 5k.
Mostly Tarmac driving. Plenty of freeway stuff.
Has now gone to an A/T by Dick Cepek FC-II.
