Hello everyone,

I am trying to find some hidden keys placed by our local 4x4 shop. The co-ordinates have a decimal point at the end of them and I cant enter the decimal into the gps.

I found 2 hiding places ( keys were gone though ) and the gps was 15-20m out.
Does anyone have a Magellan Explorist XL, am I using the right datum?
WGS84 Lat/Lon Min/Sec Km/Kmh
Would that Decimal point put the co-ordinate point be out by 15-20m?

Could also depend on what GPS was used to place the keys, I think you are correct in your assumption. Are your gps settings correct?

might help if you enter it as Deg and decimal minutes instead of Deg Min and Dec Secs.

Yes maybe their gps and my gps gave slight different readings in opposite directions.
I just tried entering it in as Deg and Dec Mins and it came up about 300m out.
Mabye they should have stated what datum they used or maybe that's part of the challenge to sort that out ourselves.

The guys that found the keys was one team of 3 guys and they reportedly used a cell phone to find them.
I cant find an app that will do that on my new Samsung S4 phone.

Hi Ray, I just had a play with my old car GPS and it lets you choose the method of entry for coordinates. I set it to: DD MM SS.S and it appears to have worked.
Third last key looks to be in Forest, near Irish town

If my calculations are correct, the last key is less than a k from your house mate!
It's in fern glade.

Hi Lucas, my gps wont allow for a Des point or at least I cant find a way to do it.

Well I did find a key, it took some finding but I knew it was there somewhere because it was on a beach and there was no footprints there yet. So I have an 8.333333% chance of winning the $500.

You're splitting that $500 between the 192 views the thread has right now... Right?

Edit... Damn Autocorrect!
