Hey guys,

Bit of a story behind this one... My brother's tb45 patrol has been into a mechanic to have the front timing cover seal and harmonic balancer replaced, shortly after this it started to loose power so I checked the ignition timing for him and it was completely out, I had to rotate the distributor clockwise full adjustment just to set it to the standard base timing.

As time went on it got worse again and wouldn't start so he took it to another mechanic not happy with the service of the first mechanic. The second mechanic did a compression test which showed it was down on compression. I asked him to do a leak down test on it but he neglected to do so and on an assumption he took the head off and got it reconditioned which made no difference and still wouldn't start.

Stuck for ideas the mechanic spoke with me, I suggested it could be the engine timing affecting the compression test i.e. skipped a tooth, broken tensioner etc. putting the valve timing out. So he went ahead and pulled down the front of the motor down finding the harmonic balancer suspiciously loose, work carried out by the first mechanic. After this we also noticed that the crankshaft gear was hard up against the motor and loose on the woodruff key, both the woodruff key and crankshaft gear were flogged out due to how little surface area were connecting the two.

Here's some pictures of the gear pushed right back on the crank, how it was when we pulled it apart. The slop between the key and gear explains how the valve timing could be out and we were probably lucky the key didn't shear completely.

Damaged crank gear and woodruff key:

So yeah :) has anyone come across a problem like this before? It's like the crank gear is somehow being pushed back further than it should be which means there's very little meat of the woodruff key is in contact with crank gear, the harmonic balancer won't tighten down completely either. I have a feeling if it's put back together the way it is the key will just flog out again.

Any help appreciated,

Brett.
