Hello I am new to this forum and don't really know were to ask questions.
I have a 2007 GU IV Patrol ZD30 Common Rail Auto with the A/T Temp light on and it will not run. I took the battery lead off last night and replaced it this morning and the engine started up first kick, then ran for approx 30 sec before the A/T Temp light came on again and then it stopped. The engine will not start while this is on ??? Now I know it is not hot so why does the Temp light come on and shut it down ????????

I would reallyappreciate any help ?

This will be a dumb question but would those autos have a oil sensor ? If so maybe it's low on oil ?
Just throwing it out there.

No that's not a dumb question, problem is I can only check the oil while it is running if that is correct ???
I was thinking along the lines as a faulty oil sensor but I dread to think were that will be hidden.

It really gets under my skin the computer has stopped the engine dead from running and I see a big risk in taking this outback. Oil and filters are good changed last month, there is oil in the trany and there is no oil leaks. I can take the battery leads off for a while and reset the computer then it will start and run fine for 30 sec or so before it shuts off again. I can't image the frustration this would cause if I was out in the bush. It looks as though it will be a tilt tray job from here but I am hoping somebody knows something about this symptom ??? Anybody ??? OR is there anybody that knows how to read the codes from these common rail engines, I have tried 1 & 8 and yes it was done correctly but that doesn't seem to work on these models.

might need to invest on a scan gauge mate saved me a few times

I would but don't know for sure what works with the ZD30DDTi Common Rail, apparently they are different ? Just another thing to sh*.*t me right off because I know Nissan will hit me big just to do a scan and then the tow on top of that just to find out what maybe the problem. The only dealer for Nissan here is Belbowrie Motors and they will wound the biggest of bulls. So if there is a way to bridge the ecu differently that works or if somebody knows which scanner will work that would be fantastic information.

I wound't think the A/T temp light coming on would stop the engine from running, put the auto into fail safe mode yes..... but not shut the engine down.

When the "engine will not start while this is on" is it cranking over? does it seem like it is cranking over slowly? do you have to jump start the vehicle?

When you turn the ignition on (engine not running) what other warning lights are on in the dash? CEL (check engine light), battery light?

G'day Billy boy,
hate to be a glass half full type (actually I firmly believe that if there's a space at the top, don't fritz around with kweschuns, just fill the bloody thing and keep going), but had an engine warning myself recently and in the long run, if you don't have the gear to read the error, the only safe, practical way out is bleed through the eyes at the shop where they can tell you what's needed.
I reckon I don't have the gonads to go bush up some remote creek bed and hope that the cheap, maybe fix is all that was required.
Total bummer I know but that's the way I went. Good part is I'm confident that all is fully reliable again.
Regards
Col

Thanks for the info and help guys.. Well I found the problem was a fuse under the bonnet, this car has seen a lot of dust and the 20amp Eng Cont fuse was contacting but not quite good enough. I stumbled across it by accident and in fact pulled it out previously to check it, but obviously it did not contact even after the check. The 2nd time I checked that fuse box under the bonnet the car made a bit of a fire up before stopping again, so I played about in that spot only to find out that's were the bloody problem was from the get go. What a pain in the arse electrical sh*.*t is !!! 2 days of hell that cost me.

Cheers Col, I am going to fill 5 bloody glasses up tonight and maybe more unless I get in trouble :-)

Also thanks Yendor, Hodge, My third 256, schanmala.. Appreciateyou trying to help.

One more thing though.. Does anybody know of a scanner that definitely works with the ST Nissan Patrol GU IV Common Rail ZD30DDTi ?

Very glad you solved the issue mate, and the fact it wasn't anything overly expensive is great! I'd have a few stubbies my self ( infact I'm having some anyway lol ) just out of excitement, after fixing annoying s*** like that.
As for the scanner. I use a bluetooth unit like this.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Auto-OBD2-CAN-Scanner-Diagnostic-tool-For-TORQUE-ANDROID-ELM327-Bluetooth-/291010591602?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43c1953b72&_uhb=1

And i bluetooth it to my phone and use an app called Torque. Has a heap of feeatures. Never had any faults on my car (knocks on wood), but found some codes on my mates ST-L, after it was going into limp mode.
Other here might have better suggestions.

Thanks Hodge your a gentleman.. I looked on their site and bought one outright for $22 delivered, at that price I won't care to much if it is not compatible but hopefully it will let me see the codes. As that one didn't cost much I am still open to other opinions if there is any out there ??? Keep in mind this is a 2007 common rail GU IV and I have heard a lot don't work with this model. I will definitely keep you posted on what I got and what works & does not for 2007 common rail onwards patrols.

Hope it works out for you mate. I only tried it on my patrol as I has one lying around since I used it it on my D22, common rail before this car and it worked fine. So far it works no dramas on my 2009 common rail, I doubt much has changed since the 2007 though, I can't see why it shouldn't work.
But as I said, others here might want to comment or recommend something else.

google ultragauge

BillPatrol

Ok thanks Kevin07 that looks very handy so I bought one of those as well :-)
I will wait till these two code readers arrive and see how they work & compare from here. The biggest problem with modern vehicles is electrics, they don't like dust, water or practically anything a 4x4 does. Hopefully both will work a treat, they will definitely make me a very confident Patrol'er if they do.

Happy to post my review on both gadgets when they arrive if anybody is interested.

I have the ultragauge too and very happy with it, gives me that bit of extra confidence when going on trips.
Can set it to alarm you if engine temp is high and lots of other problems.

Yes got that option Kevin.. Postage was pricey at around $55 but I will be one happy camper if these things do the job. Looks like a good little setup.

Another question if anybody knows.. Do all the ST - GU IV Patrols have a power and hold switch for the auto ? Mine does not seem to have them but I thought that would be standard ??? The buttons are there but no loomes are available to plug in which suggests to me this is not standard or somebody has had the console apart and pushed the plugs up under the dash somewhere ?

BillPatrol

I bought this thing from the auctions a month ago and just trying to iron everything out. Seems strange it has buttons there for power & hold but not connected to anything.

Bill,

The button should be connected ..... lift up the centre console and you should find the corresponding plug. Two Screws on the side of the console near the dash, and another screw under the Ashtray.

Well yesterday I lost drive.. Well drive works but the patrol wants to start from 3rd gear in drive instead of first gear, 1st & 2nd are fine and then if you slip it into drive that works fine as well once going at speed until you slow down for the kick down in which case it just kicks into neutral. I went all over the Patrol again and the fluid looked pinkish so I dumped it which came out a strawberry colour fluid. I dropped the pan while I was in "panic mode" but only found plenty of metal and black sludge in the bottom, even the filter gauze had particles of metal in it. My guess is the tube going through the radiator ruptured :-(
This is a 2007 Patrol and has not quite done a 100,000 k yet .. ! The radiator looks immaculate from the outside and inside when cap removed. How the hell could the tube running through the radiator be so bloody weak ?

I think I got 1 hours sleep last night.. Just too upset.

BillPatrol

Ok it was not the radiator as I first thought.. The bell housing was half full of fresh water when I cracked the seal between it and the motor. Obviously a lot of pressure going on in there and the water gradually worked its way into the transmission through the seal.

Costly mistake so I suggest anybody going through creeks or anybody in general check and make absolutely sure the small drain hole in the bell housing is not blocked, run a strong bit of wire through it.
