View Full Version : Announcing You4wd.com - 4x4 video track database around the world

Hi everyone,
Well here it is, after 12 months of part time and painful work, I have finally finished the website!!!
The link is below but please have a quick read of what It's all about and why I developed it.
Whenever I go to a new area to 4wd I always jump on Youtube to check out the tracks, etc but found it hard to find related videos of the area.
Example: If you type WoodsPoint 4wd, etc into Youtube you get a lot of results but tracks aren't named on the videos and most of the videos of the area you never find due to the lack of keywords used. There are literally millions of videos on Youtube named incorrectly such as "Joe Blow big hill climb" or "Andy deep bog hole", etc.
I have developed a website which has pulled in thousands of Youtube videos onto a map of the world exactly where the video was taken, (place marked on Google Maps).
So now if you are going to a new area or simply want to check out some videos in a particular area just zoom into the area on the map and all the videos will pop up where the video was taken on the day.
If you log in to the website using your Google account / Youtube account you can even chat and leave comments on each video similar to how Youtube works. You can also follow other users so if you see a video that you like you can click on the user to check out their other videos, follow them and get updates if they upload any more, etc.
There is also an option to upload your own videos to the map by either putting the place mark of where the video was taken on a map or even manually entering the Longitude and Latitude coordinates.
The hardest part to this but the best part is that I have developed applications to use on android or iOS devices. The applications are purely a record and upload feature of your videos so if you are taking a video of a 4wd track or someone 4wding then use the app. The app automatically records your GPS location whilst you are recording.
Once you finish recording simply upload the video to the map or save it to upload later on when you get back to wifi. This is a very user friendly way to record videos and the application will know exactly where that video was taken to upload to the map and automatically put the place mark of the video in the spot it was taken from. Saves a bucket load of time trying to remember where each video was taken or recording the coordinates yourself!
NOTE: When you are signed in with your Google/Youtube account you are actually uploading the videos to your own Youtube account. The app talks with Youtube, uploads it to your own Youtube account as normal but we intercept it, grab the GPS location and the video link from Youtube once it has uploaded to show on the website.
So as above, please consider using the app's next time you record any 4wd videos as it will build the database but you will still have the videos on your Youtube account as normal.
A mammoth amount of time has gone into this to the point I gave up many times. No one has really done anything like this and I hope it kicks off purely as a fun media outlet of what we love. Not just a database of mid to extreme off road but it could also be used for people to check out track conditions for tourers and all sorts. Obviously tracks and conditions change but if we can spread the word and keep the videos fresh it could end up being a handy feature for all different types of offroaders.
I want to build an enormous database of georeference 4x4 videos so if anyone, anywhere in the world is looking for 4x4 videos or searching any part of the world for new tracks or checking out their local areas they jump on the website.
But...I need your help please ladies and gents!
I'm hoping that due to the fact there is no competition out there and knowing that a lot of you are members on different forums and from different parts of the world that you can help me spread the word.
I would greatly appreciate if you can just post this above or just mention this site on any other forum, Facebook, Twitter, the neighbour Bob, whatever to please get the word out there and get this website known.
Especially our overseas members as I am going to struggle trying to get it noticed in certain parts of the world in particular non predominantly English speaking countries.
Anyways....Appreciate any feedback folks, the apps were a nightmare and no doubt will find some bugs from time to time but I hope you like it!!!
Feel free to download the apps, use the site, record some videos and upload them, chat on the videos if you like, go nuts!!!
The website is you4wd.com (http://you4wd.com)

Bloody hell mate. Awesome idea. And great to see it completed.
Just something I though of thou while reading (and can maybe be added if needed), what happens to vids which are say 10 years old??
Obviously tracks and conditions change yearly so have you built in something which brings the most recent vid of, let's say power lines track is a popular one, to the top of the list of however many are there so the user is getting the most recent conditions??
Hope that makes sence. Lol.
But again, mammoth idea. Looking toward checking it out in a bit..

So pumped for you man!
Guys I've been using the app on my Android phone for a little while now and it's really good. I used it on our last forum trip and uploaded a couple of videos from it and it was a lot easier to do it that way rather than remember the location, then come home and upload via the computer and enter in the location (if I still remember it by that stage)
I downloaded the app on my iPad tonight and it seems to work great too.
Thanks Andy, let's all get this worldwide!

Thanks gents, appreciate any help you can do blokes....Awesome!!!
I gave up so many times..lol...No one has done this so there is no help out there unfortunately when problems cropped up.
Westy, yes mate have thought of that and I don't think it will be that hard. Maybe in 12 months time when its more stable and more videos I can put a script in to clear out videos older then XXXX or something along those lines for sure.

Will also spread the word and give it a shot my self! Good stuff mate. :smiley_thumbs_up:

Nothing like a late Sunday night for a big launch!
I've also been testing out the android version for Andy. It's a really great app and it hasn't even melted my phone yet!
Get onboard guys and be some of the first in history to use this app and site before it gets huge.
Oh and remember, AB has to personally approve every vid so if we were to, for example; all take vids of our junk, he'd have sit through them all. Just a thought.......

If you use the app it will automatically geo reference the location but if you're uploading to the website then it's down to the user to drag and drop a pin on Google maps so there is room for error there if the person doesn't know exactly where to drop the pin

So what happens when 10 vids get posted of bigred? How will multiple tracks vids be displayed?
Hey mate, yeah there will just be multiple place marks on the same tracks really. It would be hard to get a place mark that is exactly in the same spot as another one but I could just clear some old videos out after a while if need be.

andy is there a way to link the videos i already have uploaded to youtube to you map? or do i have to re-upload everything again?
That's what I'm interested in. If you try to reload them it will fail as it recognises it as a duplicate upload.....
AB
4th November 2013, 07:40 AM
Yeah unfortunately not...
The whole system is designed so when you log into the site or the app you are using your Youtube log in details. When you upload videos you are actually uploading the videos to your own Youtube account.
So if there is already the same video on your Youtube account it will fail, same as if you try to upload direct to Youtube using a video already on your account.
I can run scripts to pull in videos from Youtube but It's a PITA and they most likely will not be georeferenced, etc.
rusty_nail
4th November 2013, 07:41 AM
also andy, is there a way to report videos that have problems? i have found several videos already that have embedding disabled so you have to load youtube externally to watch them? if you're requesting the be able to manage youtube accounts with your website, cant you have it change the video to have embedding enabled as a requirement? otherwise over X% would not be viewable on your site?
AB
4th November 2013, 07:52 AM
Hey mate, you can report on comments but not videos at this stage, I will add that though, nice one!
Yeah most of the videos on the map are just videos that were pulled into the database from YouTube which already had georeference in their metadata. I spent about 6 months going through the entire world and removing unrelated videos and ones that did not have embedding enabled.
Might of missed a few of course.
With the apps and as default it will have embedding enabled so moving forward it shouldn't be an issue.
If you want to let us know the title of the videos effected I'll remove them mate.

lucas, after having a play around with the site, i think that if your video has a geotag on it in youtube, andys site will pick it up. aparently one video from my channel alreay made it onto andys website, and as far as i can tell, its because its the only vid with a geotag + the appropriate search tags? would i be right in assuming that Andy?

Correct mate, the easiest way I could think of was to write a program to pull the videos in that were geo tagged and used a simple keyword search to pull all videos with the words "4wd" and "4x4".
After I did this I had to remove 3000 vidoes manually as it pulled in a lot and i mean a lot of 4wd remote control cars and 4wd car yards selling cars on YouTube....It near killed me...lol
I still have that script but I really don't want to run that again on different key words. I was going to run it again on "Nissan Patrol" or "Toyota", etc but it will pull in thousands of junk videos.

bugger. so if i were to go ahead and geotag all my vids now it wouldnt pull them over into your site? as you need to run that script? also this button(below) appears to do nothing? thats not another way to do it manually? and what is classed as "recent" like 3 weeks? a month or a day? lol sorry AB, too many questions

Hey guys, when we are advertising for Andy can we try not to come across as spamming.
I asked the owner of a very popular 4WD facebook page last night if he could share a link to the website and he would not do it because one of our members had spammed it on his page that night. I think the member was trying to do the right thing for Andy but posted it in the wrong section of the facebook or something like that, but it means we missed an opportunity to reach 50,000 4WD enthusiasts.

Hey mate, that button will pull the videos you have uploaded to the you4wd site, not your YouTube videos.
No, it is not automatic, It's a script that goes and fetch unfortunately, if I left it automatic the entire world map would end up a disaster of unrelated videos.
Keep the questions and feed back coming gents, thanks Nic....Your other post with the dead page with no link is helpful, I'll fix that tonight mate, thank you!!!

Hey mate, thanks for your support...
As for 4x4Earth. Completely different to them mate. They run mainly on the forum for networking and trip reports, photos, rainfall and general trip planning on their map database, etc. This is more towards a fun media outlet dedicated to watching 4wd videos around the world. Not a social network forum set up. 4x4Earth do not have a great deal of videos. Purely images, small report and scripts that pull in data of average weather.

Mate, download the app...
When you take a video, open the app and press record. Whilst you are recording, the video is keeping the data of the location. When finished, save the video.
Get home to WIFI, upload the video on the app and name it, etc. Job done, the app will automatically put the video on the map of where it was taken and the details you put in. Your video will also upload to your own YouTube account as if you were normally uploading to YouTube.
Easy done!

Hey mate, it would basically be pretty silly of the user to video record something that is illegal I would say. YouTube is full of these videos and the users even name the area or track they are doing it on too which baffles me.

For sure mate I understand.
I have spent a huge amount of time developing a great admin portal to manage all incoming videos which need to be approved by me which I will monitor.
For the best of my ability I will try my best to keep this clean but will also be reliant on users to help me report any illegal activities.
I understand what you are saying with the gps location but if any parks or council wanted to check their area they can just simply type those keywords into YouTube of their state forest and it will bring up an enormous amount of videos which they can identify tracks.
I know my area quite well and if I type in Toolangi state forest you can pretty much identify every track in the vids by just looking at them.
As mentioned, if anyone finds any videos that are not appropriate, just put a comment on the video and I will remove them.

You tube is a lot harder to troll through than a library that is already catalogued.
I was wondering if you could have a "agreement" page each time somebody uploads that states that the video has been filmed on a gazetted track that is not seasonally closed. That way you are making people aware.
If you want to discuss track closures further pm me your number and I will let you know what we have gone through.

Hey spuddly, what exactly don't you get?
how to upload them?
If you are taking videos then use the app to record your videos as it will do it all for you. (Location of the video, put in the title and details and just press upload either on the spot or wait until you get home on WIFI). That's the easiest way moving forward.
For existing videos that have not been recorded on the app then you have two options...
http://you4wd.com/upload/
The link above is the desktop version of uploading existing videos on your computer. Just sign in with your Google/YouTube account and follow the steps shown on the page.
You have to manually tell the site where the video was taken which can be difficult to know thats why I developed the apps which do it all for you.
You can either enter the coordinates (longitude and latitude) of where it was taken or move the placemark onto the spot where it was taken.
I would prefer people to use the apps as it can be hard to pin point on a map and I don't want the site to be filled with incorrect positions.
Is that what you were lost with mate?

But you can't upload a video to the site if you already have it uploaded to YouTube as it will recognise it as a duplicate upload.

Not 100% sure what you're not sure about LOL, but...... Think of it as 4x4earth but videos instead of just tracks .
My understanding is Andy is cataloging videos onto a map with geo references so when one wants to go for a wheel they can look at the track on the map and see what other videos people have uploaded.
Its also simple when you take vids.... take a vid of a track somewhere in the world, you can just click upload on the app(easiest way) and it will place that vid with reference(coordinates) to the map
I hope that is right..LOL
I have had a quick look at this a while ago and thought it would be a winner... NOW IT IS!!

I don't follow you Garry, Aren't seasonal closures just that, so if I upload a video of a track that has seasonal closures doesn't mean I was on it when it was closed. As far as I know there is no date reference to videos uploaded via the you4wd app so no one in authority could use You4wd.com's website as evidence to help close tracks.
Andy does the You4wd.com app have any reference 2 dates that are displayed on the website???

From what I can see there is absolutely no date reference on you4wd's website for videos, the only way to tell when a certain video was uploaded is by going into youtube's website and searching for the video, and without testing it my guess is the date published displayed is only the date uploaded to there website which doesn't mean the video wasn't taken 6 months earlier.

Slight correction, if you are going to take a video, open the app and record the video through the app and the rest is self explanatory.

No it doesnt mate but as normal with Youtube you can click on the video to go to YouTube where the video is hosted and it will show the submitted date of the video.
NOTE: That is the date the person uploaded the video so does not necessarily mean the date the video was recorded.

Hi everyone,
Just posted this on the you4wd.com Facebook page but just wanted to share it here as I had a few chats to our members about it.
This is a valuable mod which was a nightmare to do but a million percent worth the effort!!!!!
Hi folks, finally the new report feature is now complete!!
When you click on a place mark you will now see a "Report" button on the video thumbnail.
You can either report that the video has illegal wheeling or report that the video is in an incorrect spot and the option is there for you to give us the correct Longitude/Latitude coordinates.
This will alert us and action will be taken asap!
Thanks again for your feedback!
This will now ensure the site is kept clean and not filled with idiots destroying the environment or giving more ammunition to certain people/industries the perception of us being disrespectful in general.
Please, I encourage you all to search the map and especially your local area to make sure our growing database is not only clean but accurate for all the users on you4wd.com
We just ticked over 1000 visitors a day and currently sitting at 5550 videos.
Lets build it up to be a great resource!
If you haven't already, please like the Facebook page and please share it around to help us build the map and keep it honest!!!!

If you haven't liked the page please do so and share it around. I want to try and get as many people as possible to upload some videos over the holidays!!!
Stay safe over the holidays folks and remember to please download the apps before you leave and record all of your 4x4 videos using the apps to upload to the database.
Remember you can also save the videos to upload when you get home to WIFI and your videos are still uploaded to your own YouTube account as normal.
Applications for both iOS and Android can be downloaded at http://you4wd.com/upload.php

Hey guys. If everybody could like, comment and share the 4WD Action post then it will get more views too. Same goes for any post Andy makes on the you4wd Page, but don't share everything or people will get annoyed, just a like and comment will do wonders for Andy.

For anyone interested.
I have been chatting with John from On The Dirt who does some amazing videos for both Simon and all of the ARB Extreme Winch Challenges.
I have just uploaded a heap of his professional videos around Rockhampton, Mackay and Border Track SA areas.
Great videos to watch if anyone's bored.

That's a very cool site! Had no idea it existed before today.
Would it be OK if I would post a link to it on a Romanian 4x4 forum?
