I'm sorry if this problem has already been dealt with in this forum but I am new to the site and have been asked by my friend to seek help.
He has a Nissan 3ltr turbo diesel auto Patrol 2010 model.
His first issue was a "Screeching sound coming from vicinity of turbo. No loss of power just noise."
It was misdiagnosed as turbo bearing" by a backyard mechanic .
The turbo was replaced by a genuine mechanic with an aftermarket turbo. According to the supplier it is exactly same as the original. However, after waiting two months to get the thing fixed, the Noise was still there whilst driving home from mechanic's workshop.[B] BTW mechanic kept the old turbo and has lost it!
Went back to the backyard mechanic who discovered the issue was actually a broken manifold bolt which resulted in a warped manifold. BYM had manifold machined and fitted new bolts and gaskets result - Noise gone. However, not withstanding the noise, the new turbo didn't kick in until 2400 rpm unlike the 1600 rpm of the old one. The result - first gear is really slow. He initially spoke to a Nissan workshop foreman who had no idea at what rpm turbo should kick in, so decided waste of time taking vehicle to those donkeys.
The BYM thought the problem was a blocked Catalytic Convertor which was removed for better exhaust flow. No change to performance.
After still trying to solve the turbo problem it was noticed the EGR pipe had split. BYM capped the pipe with a plate. Still no improvement.
Since having all this work done he has now found there is a massive leak at the turbo causing a build up of soot etc on the firewall. I read one thread which stated problems caused by build up of oil in the intercooler so I've mentioned that to him. I also spoke with some mechanics at the Bathurst Races who said the computer needs programing after the turbo was changed.
He has no confidence in Nissan Worksops as no-one he speaks to can give him a straight answer.
Can anyone on this forum help?
