View Full Version : Bit of surface rust to sort out

Hi,

Just after a bit of advice to sort out some surface rust around the right rear quarter panel and the left wheel arch.

My plan is to hit it with grinder/wire brush, clean it up with a bit of wet-or-dry sand paper, etch prime it, prime it X 2 then top coat it (had some paint made up today to match the original) and wipe down with wax/grease remover between each step.

My questions are - is the etch primer enough to treat the bare steel and how much of the surrounding area should I take back? Is a few square centimetres ok or should I take back a fair amount of the surrounding paint?

Cheers,

Bill

I would probably stick some rust convertor on it and in the holes too, as it will probably have eaten through the outer skin by the looks of it ( Rust is normally always worse than it looks ). Etch Primer is good, but will only be a thin layer on the outside.

Possibly the longer term repair would be to cut the rust out and weld or glue another piece of tin to cover the spot

G'day Bill,
sorry to say but I'm with the Happyman. Rust sucks and it's rarely bubbling under pain without having come from the inside. If you have the courage, get a scribe or something pointy, place it in the centre of one of the bubbles and push in straight and hard. Don't let it veer across the surface though or you'll be really pi***d. If it doesn't make an impression you're a lucky bunny. If it goes through you've arrived at Happy's place.
Good luck
